The NCAA News
Every taut moment of the more than three-hour marathon championship game was worth the anguish for the Southern Illinois Edwardsville softball team.
The 12 innings it took for the Cougars to finally post a 3-2 victory and overcome the NCAA Division II defending softball champion Lock Haven Lady Eagles won’t soon be forgotten.
This one will be hard for the participants to embellish in later years when re-telling the story after the two teams played the longest Division II softball championship game May 21 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
The longest previous title game was in 1991 when Augustana (South Dakota) defeated Bloomsburg in 10 innings.
The Cougars didn’t appear to be on the verge of breaking the tie score in the top of the 12th after their first two batters grounded out against Lock Haven all-American pitcher Kristin Erb. Lead-off hitter Jodie Ohlau singled to right field and advanced to second on a single by Courtney Mall.
That set the stage for right fielder Ashley Price, who singled to left to score Ohlau and break the 2-2 deadlock. Price’s game-winning hit came after a brief meeting with coach Sandy Montgomery and on Erb’s 199th pitch of the game.
“Coach said to poke it through and that’s all we needed,” Price said.
After catcher Libby Lenart grounded out, it was up to Cougars pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo to close out the game. She allowed a one-out single by Lock Haven’s Sarah Norris but was able to complete her ninth inning of scoreless relief to give Southern Illinois Edwardsville its first softball crown.
The Cougars, 49-8, ended the year with a 16-game win streak.
“We peaked at the end of the season and played our best (in the final),” Montgomery said.
Colosimo, who won three games and saved another at the finals site, was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. Her performance also included a no-hitter against Lock Haven, which dropped the Lady Eagles into the consolation bracket.
“Everybody’s still asking if this is real, if it’s not a dream,” Colosimo told the Associated Press. “It’s just crazy, but I knew we could do it.”
Colosimo entered the championship game in the fourth inning and allowed only four hits while striking out 14 en route to her 29th win of the season.
Erb, who struck out nine, was equally impressive for the Lady Eagles. She went all 12 innings, allowing two earned runs on 13 hits and one walk.
Lock Haven was disappointed with the result, but the Lady Eagles were 52-5 on the season with two of the losses coming at the hands of the Cougars in the double-elimination format used at the finals site.
“I am very happy with my team — only five losses this whole year and a national runner-up,” said Lock Haven coach Kelly Green. “A lot of teams would dream of that position. It was a wonderful season.”
Colosimo, Ohlau and Lenart were joined on the all-tournament team by shortstop Kaeleigh Rousey. Erb, Julia Popovich and Eisenbise were all-tourney selections for Lock Haven.
