In only seven years, Joe Urso already is the winningest baseball coach in Tampa history.
Win No. 318 will be easy to remember after Urso guided his alma mater to its second consecutive and fifth overall Division II Baseball Championship June 1.
The Spartans were crowned after junior pitcher Jonathan Holt threw a complete game to lead them to a 7-2 victory over Columbus State at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.
It is the first time a team has won consecutive Division II national titles since Tampa celebrated back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993. Urso was a second-team all-American second baseman on the 1992 club.
Tampa finished the 2007 season with a 53-10 record. The Spartans are a combined 107-16 (.870) over the last two springs.
“We were all in awe of it,” Urso told the Tampa Tribune. “It’s something I take a lot of pride in. It’s something that is so important to me, because I’m able to say that I’ve been a big part of continuing this tradition here.”
This edition of the Spartans went 4-0 at the finals with the five-run spread against Columbus State being the smallest margin of victory.
Holt, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, allowed six hits, one earned run and struck out eight against Columbus State (51-19).
Normally, the team’s closer (he led the Spartans with 19 saves on the season), Urso selected Holt to make only his second start of the year in the final. Holt’s first start was in the regional final that advanced his team to Montgomery.
“Coach Urso and (pitching) coach Sam Militello told me to go as long and as hard as possible,” Holt told the Montgomery Advertiser. “I’m thankful I was able to and it was nine innings.”
Holt kept the Cougars off balance by working both sides of the plate. Seventy-three of his 93 pitches were strikes.
“He got tougher as the game wore on,” said Columbus State coach Greg Appleton. “The difference in the game was how he held us down.”
Columbus State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to an unearned run. Tampa’s offense awoke in the top of the fourth.
Spartans catcher Chris Rosenbaum delivered a run-scoring double to tie the game, and Tampa took the lead later on a wild pitch by Columbus State starter Anthony Arrington.
Rosenbaum hit his second double in the championship game in the eighth to give Tampa a 4-1 advantage. The Spartans added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth on back-to-back homers from Junior Mejia and Troy Ferguson.
Holt gave up a run in the ninth, which prompted Militello to visit the mound.
“I looked him in the eye and asked him if he could finish it,” Militello said. “He gave me a flat yes. I told him thanks for getting me some television time.”
Two fly outs later, the title was secure.
