This year’s NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championship featured a rematch of last year’s finalists but produced different results. Lynn defeated Valdosta State, 5-1, to win the 2007 tournament May 12 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The Fighting Knights swept the three doubles matches and captured wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to snag the program’s first national title. The duo of Denis Reinert and Dennis Riegraf, playing at No 2. doubles, earned Lynn’s first point of the match by defeating Joerg Ekkenga and Nikolas Overkemping, 8-4. Lorenzo Cava and Julien Carsuzaa added a point with their win against Dominik Hansen and Leos Jelinek, 8-5, while the freshman tandem of Tomas Racak and Axel Joachim at No. 3 doubles completed the sweep with a 9-7 victory.

Riegraf also contributed a point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Thomas Provost at No. 3 singles. Racak downed Nikolas Overkemping, 7-5, 6-1, to secure the championship for the Fighting Knights.

Dominik Hansen defeated Joachim to post Valdosta State’s only point in the match.
“This is a great win for Lynn and especially for a great group of guys,” said Lynn head coach Mike Perez, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Coach of the Year. “We’ve played extremely well the past couple of days and beat some tremendous opponents.”

Riegraf, the ITA Southeast Region Senior of the Year and Lynn record holder for career doubles wins, said he couldn’t imagine a better way to end his career.
“The best part is being able to win and share the experience with my teammates,” said Riegraf, who tied the school record for career singles victories with 72.

Lynn finished the year with just four losses against 24 wins, the most in program history. Perez also picked up his 600th career victory during the season.
Valdosta State closed the season with a 20-6 mark.
