Adams State collected its fifth straight team victory by a record 115-point margin over Seattle Pacific at the Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships November 17 at Missouri Southern State.
The Grizzlies yielded the individual title to Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler, but were the only squad to place its five scoring runners in the top 25 individually in extending their Division II record total of team championships to 13. Adams State won eight straight team titles from 1992 through 1999.
The veteran Grizzlies, who returned six of last year’s seven championship-team members, became the first squad to win the Division II women’s meet by more than 100 points, topping the 93-point victory by Western State (Colorado) in 2000.
A trio of seniors led the way for Adams State, with Tanya Gaurmer crossing the line for third place individually, 14 seconds behind Pixler and only a second behind runner-up Winrose Karunde of Abilene Christian. Teammate Britany Somers equaled her performance at last year’s championships, finishing seventh among team scorers and eighth overall, while Lavenna Mullenbach scored 11th and finished 13th overall.
Seattle Pacific’s Pixler, who finished 10th overall last year, was joined in this year’s top 10 by teammate Jane Larson, who scored eighth and finished ninth overall. The Falcons’ cold-stricken third runner, Suzie Strickler, was cleared to run only minutes before the race and finished 47th among scoring runners, but Pixler credited her and fourth- and fifth-place scorers Karin Rohde and Kate Harline with a surge near the end that edged Grand Valley State for Seattle Pacific’s best team finish at the championships. Four teams finished within 13 points of Seattle Pacific in the race for runner-up honors.
“They were the heroes of the race because they were all facing adversity and they made the difference in the end,” she said.
Pixler overcame a bit of adversity herself after tangling with another runner in the lead pack and stumbling midway through the 6,000-meter race. She recovered to eventually pull away and win with a time of 20 minutes, 29.1 seconds.
Grand Valley State finished third for the second straight year to post its third straight top-three finish. Cal State Chico equaled its best finish, placing fourth for the third time in 10 appearances at the national meet, while Cal State Los Angeles rounded out the top five.
Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach was the best finisher competing without a team, placing fourth individually.
