Sports sponsorship:
Kutztown University of Pennsylvania will add women’s lacrosse and women’s bowling beginning with the 2007-08 school year, bringing the number of varsity sports at Kutztown to 23. “We feel that participation in intercollegiate athletics has a beneficial effect on students — in the classroom as well as the field of competition,” said Kutztown President F. Javier Cevallos. “We are delighted to be able to make this opportunity available to more of our students.” Women’s lacrosse returns to Kutztown after a 16-year hiatus. The program was offered from 1975-90 and was responsible for the first women’s championship in school history (the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title in 1982). The team will play a nonconference schedule before competing in the PSAC beginning in spring 2009. The new women’s bowling team will compete as an independent. Kutztown Athletics Director Greg Bamberger said the two sports will add about 40 opportunities for females, bringing Kutztown’s female-to-male student-athlete numbers more in line with the female-to-male undergraduate population. He said national searches for head coaches of the two sports will begin immediately. Funding for the new programs will come from the Student Government Association, the KU Foundation and university budgets.

Milestones: Wayne State University (Michigan) women’s basketball head coach Gloria Bradley recorded her 200th collegiate win February 8 with a 57-51 victory at Mercyhurst College. Bradley’s career mark after that game stood at 200-170. Now in her seventh season at Wayne State, Bradley also coached seven years at Montclair State University ... Bentley College extended its own NCAA Division II record for consecutive 20-win seasons in women’s basketball to 24 with a 71-56 win over the University of Massachusetts at Lowell February 17.

Miscellaneous: St. Cloud State University received $100,000 to provide scholarships for student-athletes in the men’s ice hockey program. The gift established the Roland A. Vandell Family Endowed Scholarship. Vandell was a math major who played hockey at St. Cloud State Teachers College during the 1930s. He went on to earn his master’s and doctorate in education, then taught at St. Cloud State and coached the Huskies hockey team from 1946-50 and during the 1951-52 season. He was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame in 1987. Vandell and his family were honored during ceremonies at a January 19 home game ... The Northeast-10 Conference conducted its inaugural Women in Athletics Seminar February 2 at Bentley College. The seminar was open to current Northeast-10 student-athletes interested in pursuing a career in athletics. The seminar offered student-athletes the opportunity to interact with women collegiate athletics professionals within the Northeast-10 through panel discussions. Presenters included Joan Lehoullier, senior associate athletics director at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell; Merrimack College Sports Information Director Lisa Cascio, Northeast-10 women’s basketball official Joanne Aldrich, and Merrimack Director of Sports Medicine Birgid Hopkins. Kathy DeBoer, the executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, was the keynote speaker ... California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Robert J. Hiegert announced that the league will play men’s and women’s postseason basketball championships beginning in 2007-08. “This showcase event will not only allow us to highlight the outstanding basketball played in the CCAA, but it should serve to better prepare our student-athletes and coaches as they ready for NCAA championship play,” Hiegert said. After completion of a 20-game conference schedule, the top eight teams in the standings will advance to the postseason tournament. The two eight-team tournaments will begin simultaneously on March 4, 2008, with first-round contests to be played on campuses of the higher seeds. The winners would advance to the semifinals and finals to be played in conjunction at Coussoulis Arena, on the campus of California State University, San Bernardino. With the inaugural softball championship set to start this spring, the CCAA will have an end-of-the season tournament for 11 of the 13 sports by the end of the next basketball season. In 1999, the CCAA women’s basketball teams played in their last conference tournament under a different format. The tournament had a four-team format and was not held in conjunction with the men’s tournament. The last men’s tournament was played in 1995.
