Facilities: Augustana College (South Dakota) officials announced that construction of Kirkeby-Over Stadium will begin soon on the site of the Vikings’ current practice field. Bill Gross, Augustana athletics director, said the addition of an on-campus football stadium is a giant step in the ongoing enhancement of the athletics program. “All I can say is: What an exciting day for Augustana,” Gross said. “Kirkeby-Over Stadium will impact the culture and tradition associated with the college. It points to a tremendously positive future for Augustana College and Viking athletics.” Alumni Kari and Bob Hall donated $6.1 million for an on-campus facility that has been missing for half a century. That gift came two weeks after Augustana President Rob Oliver revealed that anonymous donors made a $6 million gift toward the redesign and reconstruction of the school’s Mikkelsen Library. “These are indeed exciting times at Augustana,” Oliver said. Kirkeby-Over Stadium honors the memory of Kari Hall’s father and mother, Percy Kirkeby and Elizabeth Markley Kirkeby Over. Kirkeby-Over Stadium will include a FieldTurf surface in a bowl-like venue with seating for about 6,500 people, including 2,200 chairback seats. Fans will also be able to watch the action from berms in the end zones. “We intend to have this part of an overall facility plan for football, soccer and track,” Oliver said.

Sports sponsorship: The University of Nebraska at Omaha will add tennis as its sixth men’s sport beginning in 2008-09. Current women’s head coach Bill Nichols also will serve as the men’s head coach. Adding a men’s sport was a condition of Nebraska-Omaha joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, which it will do next fall, and league officials preferred tennis to give the conference the minimum number required to be officially sanctioned as an NCAA Division II conference in tennis. Nichols is in his eighth season as women’s coach.

Miscellaneous: In conjunction with the school’s 50th anniversary, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has created a new Cougar logo. While it will not take the place of the wordmark or the marketing logo, the new Cougar mark will be used primarily to support the athletics teams. Barbara O’Malley, executive director of marketing and communications, said the new logo represents “a sharper, edgier cougar image reflective of highly competitive sports teams.” School officials also not the change coincides with the institution’s reclassification to Division I. Southern Illinois Edwardsville is in the exploratory year of that transition. “With the transition to Division I, it seemed like a fitting time to update the Cougar,” O’Malley said.
