Milestones: Western Oregon University softball coach Pam Knox picked up career victory No. 300 during a 7-4 win at Seattle University May 3. Knox, who just finished her fifth season at Western Oregon, has a 13-year collegiate record of 301-290, after also leading programs at Northwest Missouri State University and Park College.

Miscellaneous: The Seattle University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee sponsored the second annual faculty/staff vs. student-athlete charity basketball game recently, with proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The student-athletes won the game, 45-38, but Make-A-Wish was the real winner, as the event raised about $1,700. Representatives from the Seattle volleyball, soccer and swimming teams made up the student-athlete squad. Seattle basketball student-athletes served as referees, and the players on the volleyball team who did not participate in the actual game performed a special dance at halftime, which received a rousing ovation. Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Recently, the national organization has granted children’s wishes to be a National Geographic photographer, an orchestra conductor, a Marine, a firefighter, a supermodel, a lifeguard, and a ballerina ... Megan Burd, chair of the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, put an exclamation point on her academic career at Wheeling Jesuit University by being named valedictorian and graduating with a perfect grade-point average. Burd, a softball student-athlete, will spend the summer teaching at a school for students with severe special needs, including autism and mental retardation, who cannot be facilitated by a mainstream program ... The recently unveiled Division II community-engagement Web site (www.diicommunity.org) already is attracting attention. The online resource that provides the membership with the opportunity to acquire, share and improve upon ideas that bring campus and community together has attracted 12 new ideas in just the first few weeks of its existence. In that span, the site has enjoyed 104,186 hits (2,252 unique hits), and visitors had stayed on the site for an average of six minutes.

Seattle University volleyball student-athlete Jenny Burrows impedes the path of Steve Sayler, the manager of the school’s department of public safety, during a charity basketball game between student-athletes and faculty/staff. The event raised about $1,700 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
