Conferences: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference voted to expand the league to 14 teams with the addition of Augustana College (South Dakota); the University of Minnesota Duluth; Minnesota State University, Mankato; and St. Cloud State University. The four institutions will begin participating within the NSIC in the 2008-09 season. “All four are a good fit with strong academic traditions in NCAA DII athletics,” said NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond. Three of the four are former members of the conference. Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State Mankato and St. Cloud State were charter members of the league, which began in 1932 as the Northern Teacher’s Athletic Conference. With the four additions, the NSIC will now consist of 14 teams over a five state area with nine institutions hailing from Minnesota, two from South Dakota, and one each from Iowa, Nebraska and North Dakota.
Sports sponsorship: University of the Incarnate Word announced it will sponsor football beginning in fall 2009. Incarnate Word President Louis J. Agnese said the Cardinals, with major backing from San Antonio businessman and New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, will construct a 3,000-seat on-campus football facility that includes a fieldhouse and offices. Construction on the facility, to be known as the Gayle and Tom Benson Fieldhouse, is slated to begin in June. School officials will begin a search for a head coach this summer. The new coaching staff then will begin the scouting and recruiting process for the first class of players to enroll at the university in fall 2008. With the addition of football, Incarnate Word will sponsor 19 teams in 12 sports.
Milestones: A pair of wins over Lees-McRae College April 18 gave Coker College’s David Hanna No. 600, all of which have come at Coker. His all-time record after the doubleheader stood at 600-161-1 since 1992 with the Cobras ... Stonehill College head men’s tennis coach Peter Miller picked up his 200th career victory in the Skyhawks’ 5-0 triumph over Pace University in the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinal round. In 27 seasons at his alma mater, Miller has posted an overall mark of 200-177 ... Shepherd University head softball coach Dave Trail reached the 100-win mark with Shepherd’s 5-2 win over Bluefield State College April 14. Trail is the second coach in program history to reach the 100-win plateau.
