Community-service effort —
Lees-McRae College’s athletics department spent the 2006-07 academic year giving back to the community in a variety of ways, as student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and staff dedicated more than 1,000 hours of their time. Some of the projects included men’s lacrosse rebuilding the Peace Garden on campus, athletic trainers picking up roadside trash and softball players hosting a youth clinic. “With most of the student-athletes working outside of the college to help pay for their expenses, many still take time to clean up the Elk River, read to elementary-school students, be a Big Brother/Big Sister and teach home-schooled children sports skills,” said Assistant Athletics Director Craig McPhail. The highlight of the year for the Bobcats came in the spring with the 2007 Mountain Day, as each team was assigned a project on or near the campus, including the athletics complex. “With more projects lined up, the Bobcats are not only giving back to the community, but also the college,” McPhail said. “It shows their appreciation for all they have received by being part of this special place in the mountains of western North Carolina.”
