The NCAA News
The West Florida Argonauts entered the title match of the 2007 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship riding an eight-match win streak. It wasn’t enough, however, to slow the momentum of defending national champion Brigham Young-Hawaii. The Seasiders defeated the Argonauts, 5-0, May 12 in Altamonte Springs, Florida, to claim their second straight national championship.
The title also was Brigham Young-Hawaii’s seventh in nine years.
The Seasiders swept the three doubles matches and earned victories at Nos. 3 and 5 singles to secure the championship. Jing Jing Liu and Maggie Deng, the second-ranked doubles team in the nation, notched the first point for Brigham Young-Hawaii when they overwhelmed Mandy Septoe and Tammy Kevey, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Yuliya Ustyuzhanina and Dori Magas teamed to earn an 8-4 win over Suzanna Cavalcante and Paola Arevalo. Anna Anikanova and Ramona Husaru completed the sweep with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Anikanova earned a straight-set win over Arevalo at No. 5 singles. Magas followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Septoe to clinch the title.
Brigham Young-Hawaii finished the year with a 33-0 record. The win in the final capped the Seasiders’ second straight undefeated season and marked the program’s 60th consecutive victory. Brigham Young-Hawaii is 293-2 in dual match play since entering Division II competition in the 1998-99 academic year.
West Florida was competing in its first national final in women’s tennis and finished the season with a 23-7 mark. It was the Argonauts’ fifth straight season with at least 20 victories.
