Without worrying about results, Stanford gets it done

The NCAA News

Stanford men’s golf is back in a big way.

The Cardinal won the program’s eighth NCAA title with an impressive wire-to-wire victory May 30-June 2 at the par-70 Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Virginia.

It is Stanford’s first golf championship since 1994, the year before the program’s most famous former player — Tiger Woods — stepped on campus.
Stanford finished with a four-day total of 11-under 1,109 (275-278-275-281), which was 12 shots better than top-seeded Georgia.

Current Stanford coach Conrad Ray, a member of the 1994 team, has completed a resurgence of the men’s golf team in only his third season.

“Life works out in interesting ways because all we did all year was try not to talk about the results,” Ray said. “We just worry about the stuff we can control, and I think this team really bought into that. They were able to do that all year, and it worked out again. It was just a really gutty performance, and I’m really proud of the guys.”

Southern California freshman Jamie Lovemark won the individual NCAA title by shooting back-to-back 64s over the final two rounds.

He erased a four-stroke deficit over the final nine holes to become the first Southern California men’s golfer to win the NCAA individual championship in 26 years, joining Ron Commans (1981).

Stanford began the tournament by shooting a 5-under-par 275 on the first day. The Cardinal carried the momentum the rest of the way to become the only team to record a four-round sub-par total.

“Our first three years, we were happy with a top five, a top three,” said senior Matt Savage. “To finally progress to winning one tournament, and then winning six and then winning the championship, it’s unbelievable.”

Stanford was led by junior Rob Grube, who took third overall with a 6-under 274 (64-71-69-70). Grube posted 18 birdies over the course of the four-day tournament.
Senior Zack Miller (70-69-67-73) and sophomore Daniel Lim (69-72-69-69) tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard at 1-under 279 for the tournament. Freshman Joseph Bramlett tied for 39th in his first NCAA appearance, carding a 5-over 285 (78-68-70-69). Savage closed out his collegiate career tied for 64th with a 292 (72-70-72-78).

Lovemark became just the eighth freshman to win the NCAA individual title and second in a row after Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore did it last year. Other freshmen to accomplish the feat include Arizona State’s Alejandro Canizares (2003) and Phil Mickelson (1989), Minnesota’s James McLean (1998), Houston’s Billy Ray Brown (1982), Wake Forest’s Curtis Strange (1974) and Texas’ Ben Crenshaw (1971).
“It’s awesome,” Lovemark said. “There are a lot of great names on the (winner’s) list. Hopefully next year our team can win it and they can share the experience I’ve had. It’s awesome to win, but I’m sure it’s much better to win as a team.”

Lovemark finished with a 9-under 271 (72-71-64-64) after posting his third 64 of the year, which was also his 21st round in the 60s and 13th in a row of 72 or lower.

Lovemark, who won his fourth title of the season, began the day tied for 11th, three strokes behind Clemson’s Kyle Stanley, Stanford’s Grube and Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale.  He recorded three straight birdies, beginning at hole No. 15, to complete his come-from-behind win.

“He knew where things were and his focus level and ability to get it done when he needed it most was commendable,” said Southern California coach Kurt Schuette. “It’s something he has been doing all year. He went out with the same intensity he has all season.”
