Sun Devils torch track and field with winning mix
Johnson’s third heptathlon victory sparks Arizona State to completion of sweep

The NCAA News

As things shook out for Arizona State’s opponents, the Sun Devils came to the Division I Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships with too many options for winning a team championship.

Arizona State overcame two throwers’ inability to advance to the finals of an early key event, then came up with a historic gutsy performance in the heptathlon and victories in the pole vault and shot put to complete a sweep of this year’s indoor and outdoor team titles during the June 6-9 championships in Sacramento, California.
The same throwers who struggled in the early going bounced back on the meet’s last day to clinch the title with Jessica Pressley’s win in the shot put and Sarah Stevens’ third-place finish in the event. Their combined 16 points put Arizona State out of runner-up LSU’s reach and ultimately gave the Sun Devils a seven-point margin of victory.

However, it was Jacquelyn Johnson’s victory in the heptathlon that put Arizona State on the path to the title.

Johnson, who finished the first day of competition in the event in fourth place, worked through injuries that have hindered her during recent weeks and capped her effort with a personal best in the javelin throw to become only the second three-time winner of the heptathlon in championships history.

Her 5,984-point total is the best in her three championships victories, but Johnson focused on the lift her performance gave her team.

“I thought I had a pretty average two days,” she told the Arizona Republic. “It’s good for me but it’s even better for the team.”

Coach Greg Kraft said Johnson’s triumph is symbolic for the Sun Devils.

“She’s just such a fighter,” he said about Johnson. “You have to grind it out and we’re like that as a team. You have to deal with adversity. (Pain is) one of these things this time of year — you can’t acknowledge it.”

The Sun Devils quickly put the pain of failing to make the finals in the hammer throw out of mind, as pole vaulter April Kubishta joined Johnson on the victory podium during the next-to-last day of competition and the Sun Devils entered the final day nursing a slight lead in the team standings. The recovery also was aided by Tai Battle’s second-place finish in the discus throw.

As the nationally televised final day of competition began, the Sun Devils also picked up crucial points from Latosha Wallace’s five-point, fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.

“Going into the day, LSU had a chance,” Kraft told the Republic. “They weren’t able to make a move on us. Latosha’s race took the pressure off.”

The Tigers, who also finished second in men’s competition, did their best to make things interesting, expecially with senior Sherry Fletcher’s surprise win in the 100-meter dash during the next-to-last day of competition. Fletcher emerged from the outside lane to win the final after posting only the eighth-fastest qualifying time in the semifinals.

“I had no idea that I won until I looked up and saw my name on the board,” she said. “Out in Lane 9, I wasn’t seeing anybody around me. All I could do was focus on my lane and try to get out to a better start than I did in the semis. I was so surprised to see my name come up first on the board.”

In other meet highlights, three senior women bettered four-year-old meet records during the championships.

Michigan’s Anna Willard shaved nearly seven seconds off a 2003 mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her 9:38.08 run and Michelle Sikes of Wake Forest similarly improved the 5,000-meter run record with her 15:16.76 time, while Georgia’s Jenny Dahlgren became the first woman to toss the hammer more than 70 meters (she won with a throw of 70.72 meters, or 232 feet).

Sikes overtook Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech down the stretch to win her race and foil Kipyego’s bid for double victories in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. But Kipyego still successfully ended a memorable year in which she also won the Division I women’s cross country title and posted an unprecedented sweep of the indoor 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.

Like Willard and Sikes, Dahlgren also wrapped up her collegiate career with a record performance — and shook off a case of nerves to do so.

“I was shaking before each one of my throws, telling myself, ‘Don’t be a wimp.’ The crowd was great today, and I’m really, really thrilled to win an NCAA title and break a meet record during the last collegiate meet of my career.”
