Selection criteria remain unchanged for water polo
The NCAA News
The Men’s Water Polo Committee has decided not to change the selection criteria for teams in the 2007 championship. The committee met January 29-30 in New Orleans.
The same three conferences, the Collegiate Water Polo Association, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the Western Water Polo Association, will receive automatic bids to the championship, subject to the approval of the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet.
The committee also decided that instead of choosing the officials for the championship in mid-November, members will select the championship officials on the same selection call that determines the participating teams. Waiting until the selection call allows the committee to consider an official’s entire body of work, including conference tournaments, which had not always been possible with the earlier selection. The committee will continue to receive input from the three automatically qualifying conferences before making the championship assignments.
Also, water polo’s national coordinator of officials, Bret Bernard, noted in his annual report that an officiating manual will be developed to share with all referees by the start of the 2007-08 academic year. Both Bernard and NCAA playing rules staff will be involved in designing the manual.
Additionally, Bernard recommended that the first two video vignettes showing examples of specific calls designed to educate officials should be online this month. Bernard also said five to eight vignettes should be online before the women’s championship in May.
Also, the committee will recommend both the site of the 2009 championship and the next chair of the committee to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet at the cabinet’s June meeting. The committee will also solicit bids for the 2010 championship in November.
Loyola Marymount University hosted the 2006 championship at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in Los Angeles. Committee members indicated that the Loyola Marymount staff produced an excellent championship. Stanford University’s Avery Aquatics Center will host the 2007 and 2008 finals.
