Schedule adjusted for Men’s College World Series
The NCAA News
The Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet’s administrative committee has approved a schedule change for the 2008 College World Series that moves the beginning of the series to Saturday instead of Friday.
In addition, the three-game championship series will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights instead of Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
That means the 2008 CWS will begin Saturday, June 14, with the finals scheduled June 23-25.
The Division I Baseball Committee recommended the change based on input from coaches, student-athletes, broadcast partner ESPN and the CWS of Omaha Inc., the sponsoring organization.
Committee members believe starting the CWS a day later will better acclimate teams to the event and provide more flexibility in accommodating schedule problems at the super regionals. This year, for example, inclement weather delayed the super regional between Oregon State University and the University of Michigan.
“It gives us a little flexibility with situations like we had this year when one of the super regionals had a rain delay and didn’t finish until Monday,” said committee Chair and Mississippi State University Athletics Director Larry Templeton. “Now, we can have an additional day to get everyone to Omaha.”
ESPN asked the committee to consider moving the best-of-three championship series to an all-weeknight format.
“There isn’t as much competition for television viewers as there is on the weekend,” Templeton said.
Reducing the number of weekday doubleheaders should also benefit the fans. Currently, the day part of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. CDT and the nightcap is at 6 p.m. If the first game runs long, it can create problems for the fans departing the first game and others arriving for the second.
“It would get us away from having two days of additional doubleheaders,” Templeton said. “We want to avoid not being fair to the teams playing the second games.”
In other items during the committee’s recent meeting, the group clarified that it will strongly consider an institution’s facility lighting capacity among criteria when selecting host sites for regionals and super regionals. Since all eight super regionals and portions of the regionals are televised by ESPN’s family of networks, suitable lighting is needed to enhance the broadcasts.
The committee also announced a price increase of $1 per ticket for the 2008 CWS.
Prices for the 2008 CWS are:
- $10 for general admission single tickets purchased at the Rosenblatt box office.
- $70 for general admission book of 10 tickets.
- $19 for individual-game reserved and $24 for individual-game box seats.
- $26 for finals-series individual-game reserved and $32 for individual-game box seats.
- $220 for reserved season tickets and $281 for box season tickets.
