The NCAA News
When Oregon State was struggling through its Pacific-10 Conference schedule, a repeat national championship seemed like a miracle away.
No divine intervention was needed, however. Instead, the Beavers just played good, solid baseball.
And when the last out was recorded at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium June 24, it was the Beavers in the middle of a familiar dog pile celebrating another NCAA title.
The 2006 and 2007 Beavers took different routes to claiming the championship trophy, but they both contributed to the first back-to-back titles since LSU in 1996 and 1997. Oregon State is only the fifth team to win consecutive Division I baseball crowns, joining Texas (1949-50), Southern California (1970-74) and Stanford (1987-88).
The Beavers, 49-18, capped an impressive postseason by sweeping the best-of-three final against North Carolina. The Tar Heels, 57-16, were the national runners-up for the second straight season after falling, 9-3, in the final game.
It is the first time the same two teams played in the final since Southern California defeated Arizona State in 1972 and 1973.
Oregon State barely made the 64-team NCAA field after finishing 10-14 in the Pacific-10. The Beavers opened regional play at Virginia where they lost their second game to the home-standing Cavaliers.
With their backs to the wall, the Beavers rallied to win three consecutive elimination games and beat Virginia twice to advance to the Super Regionals.
“In the seventh or eighth inning at Virginia, something happened in our dugout that energized us and inspired us,” said Oregon State coach Pat Casey. “I’ve never had that feeling before. Something strange happened. Some type of energy followed us from there.”
The Beavers swept Michigan in the Super Regional to advance to Omaha for a third straight time. They won all five of their games in the MCWS, and in the process set a record by winning four consecutive games by six runs or more.
“When we got here, we were excited to get in that dugout and in that locker room,” said Oregon State shortstop Darwin Barney. “We feel very comfortable in there. This is home, baby. This is Omaha.”
North Carolina, which lost, 11-4, in Game 1 of the championship series, wanted to put pressure on Oregon State in Game 2. The Tar Heels scored a run in the first inning, which handed Oregon State its first deficit in a seven-game stretch covering 61 innings.
But North Carolina’s lead didn’t last long.
Barney blasted a two-run homer in the top of second inning, and Oregon State never trailed again.
“I have to congratulate Oregon State,” said Tar Heels coach Mike Fox. “Back-to-back national championships is unbelievable, especially in Division I baseball today.”
The Beavers lost six position players, two-thirds of their starting rotation and the closer from their 2006 team. They went 4-8 in May and finished tied for sixth in the Pacific-10.
“We realized during that Virginia regional we could do this again,” said Oregon State pitcher Mike Stutes, who won Game 2 of the final series. “We started rolling again.”
