Oregon trail ends with first national title since 1977

Oregon recalled its glory days and conjured memories of runners like Steve Prefontaine and Alberto Salazar as it surged to its first team title in three decades at the Division I Men’s Cross Country Championships November 19 in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Ducks took a commanding lead early in the race behind junior Galen Rupp, who stayed at or near the front of the field for most of the 10,000-meter race until Liberty senior Josh McDougal kicked past Rupp with about 100 meters left to claim the individual title with a one-second win.
The 28-point win over Iona at Indiana State’s La Vern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course is Oregon’s first since Salazar helped lead the Ducks to victory in 1977, but fifth overall for a program that consistently was a national contender during the 1970s. It was the Ducks’ best finish at the championships since a second-place showing in 1989.

Coach Vin Lananna, who coached three Stanford teams to cross country titles, claimed his first championship since taking the reins at Oregon in 2005 — and also saw the Oregon women post a second-place finish about 45 minutes later at the Gibson Course.

“It was nice to be up there on the (awards) stage again, and I’m very proud of our teams — they’re a great group of kids,” he said.

Rupp, leader of a squad that featured three juniors and four sophomores, was philosophical about his loss in the individual competition and jubilant over the team victory.

“It’s better to go home in a van full of seven happy guys rather than one happy guy,” he said.
Although Iona was unable to seriously challenge the Ducks for the title, it did post its best finish yet at the championships, improving on a third-place run last year. Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State finished a mildly surprising third place, while Lopez Lomong’s third-place finish individually powered Northern Arizona to fourth place in the team standings. Defending champion Wisconsin rounded out the top five.

McDougal bounced back from a 27th-place finish at last year’s championships with what he admitted was a “chip on my shoulder,” and traded positions back and forth with Rupp as the pair pulled away from Lomong through the second half of the race.

Rupp attempted to pull away from McDougal entering the course’s long final stretch, but McDougal reeled Rupp back in, setting up the finish.

“With about 200 (meters) to go I saw he was tightening up and I was just about flat out, so I waited until I could see the finish line to sprint,” McDougal said.

“I was just exhausted,” he said of the finish. “I was relieved to have won it, but those final 100 meters I was barely lifting my legs, I was so exhausted.”
