Conferences: Stony Brook University will join the Big South Conference as an associate member in football beginning with the 2008 season. The institution will be immediately eligible for the conference championship. After the addition of Stony Brook, the Big South will have six Football Championship Subdivision members. Stony Brook has competed as a member of the Northeast Conference since 1999. The football team will compete as an independent in 2007. “Joining the Big South is the right move for the Stony Brook football program,” said Jim Fiore, Stony Brook athletics director. “As with everything we do at this university, our goal is to compete and be successful at the highest levels.” ... The Atlantic Sun Conference formed a partnership with Rights Marketing Group for marketing and development of corporate partnerships. The company will work with the Atlantic Sun staff and member institutions to develop and implement a marketing and promotions plan and serve as exclusive sales and marketing agent for Atlantic Sun championship sponsors, television sponsors, multimedia and other licensing partners. RMG is based in Atlanta and has worked with the Atlantic Coast Conference ... The ECAC Hockey League unveiled a new logo on March 17 during the league’s championship festivities in Albany, New York. Eastern College Athletic Conference officials worked with SME, Inc. to re-identify the league’s brand as ECAC Hockey League. The new logo has deeper and richer colors and a font that conveys the feeling of a hockey puck in motion. Ed O’Hara, chariman of SME, said it was an honor to work with the ECAC. “The ECAC Hockey League represents all that is pure about collegiate athletics. Their new brand strategy positions the league, and its member schools, for long-term success.”
Facilities: The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University athletics board approved a $20 million, 59,000-square-foot basketball practice facility. The facility, which will serve both men’s and women’s programs, should be open in 2009. It will be located next to the basketaball arena, Cassell Coliseum and will include two practice courts, men’s and women’s locker rooms, training rooms for both teams and a weight room.
Milestones: Xavier University tennis coach Jim Brockhoff became the second Division I coach to reach 1,000 wins with a 4-3 victory over George Washington University March 30. Brockhoff is the only active coach with 1,000 wins. Retired coach Jim Schwitters was the first to reach 1,000. After the victory, the Musketeers were 12-4 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Miscellaneous: Elon University announced a five-year partnership with Action Sports Media, Inc., a full-service marketing company, starting with the 2007-08 academic year. “As we continue to elevate the competitiveness and excitement of our athletics program, it is critical that our marketing efforts reflect a profile of excellence as well,” Athletics Director Dave Blank said. ASM will have exclusive rights to sell all advertisements in athletics venues, printed materials, Web site and other media. ASM will also invest in new video technology to be installed in Rhodes Stadium before the 2007-08 academic year ... The Big Ten Network, the national network dedicated to Big Ten Conference television programming scheduled to launch in August, named Elizabeth Conlisk vice president for communications. She had been assistant vice president for media relations and special assistant to the president for executive communications at Ohio State University ... Colorado State University donated more blood than any other Mountain West Conference member institution in the second annual Rebuilding Lives Blood Drive Challenge. The Rams collected 98 pints of blood. All nine Mountain West institutions collected 543 pints. The U.S. Air Force Academy won the 2006 competition ... Charleston Southern University will deliver wireless live video and AIDO streaming of soccer and softball events later this month. Xirrus, Inc. will provide the wireless technology. “Most NCAA conferences require their conference teams to provide live audio and video feeds of all sports venues,” said Rusty Bruns, chief information officer at Charleston Southern. “Current generation Wi-Fi Access Points lack the throughput, capacity and range to support our application. With Xirrus, we now have a high capacity wireless network allowing us to stream live video and audio coverage of two different sporting events while also satisfying various Title IX requirements.”
