The NCAA News

Legendary Auburn swimming and diving coach David Marsh will hang up his whistle on top of his game. Marsh led the Tigers to their record-tying fifth straight national title March 17, as Auburn easily finished ahead of second-place Stanford at the Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis.

The outcome of the meet was never in question, as the Tigers jumped out to a sizable lead on the first day of competition. Auburn finished with 566 points, well ahead of Stanford, which scored 397 points. Arizona, Florida and Texas rounded out the top five.

While the Auburn sprinters garnered much of the attention during the meet, it was a total team effort for the Tigers. During the three days of competition, 18 athletes combined for a school-record 64 all-American honors.

“This is probably my third, fourth or fifth most talented team,” Marsh said. “But we’ve never had a better meet top to bottom. There are so many great individuals, and I could go down story by story and tell you how they have gone from rags to riches, including all three of our captains. This group has a lot of depth that involves where they have come from and what they have gone through.”

Cesar Cielo became the first Tiger to win the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events at the same NCAA meet. On the first day of competition, Cielo set an NCAA record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 18.69 seconds. The sophomore also won national titles as a part of two Auburn relays that set NCAA records in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relays.

After breaking a number of NCAA records during the first two days of the meet, Cielo finished in style, setting a national record in the 100-yard freestyle in 41.17 seconds.
“I’m really proud of myself,” said Cielo. “I’m really happy with my results. I wasn’t really expecting to go that fast. I’m glad I’m still a sophomore and have two years to go, and hopefully I’ll go faster next year.”

Southern California’s Larsen Jensen won two national titles, swimming to victory in the 500-yard freestyle (4:09.80) and 1,650-yard freestyle (14:26.70). Arizona’s Albert Subirats won the 100-yard backstroke (44.83) and 100-yard butterfly (44.57). His time in the butterfly was a meet record.

Auburn senior Steven Segerlin capped his collegiate career by winning a pair of national titles at the meet and third of his career. Segerlin earned 11 all-American honors during his four-year career with the Tigers.

The Tigers swept the post-meet awards as Marsh was named NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year, Jeff Shaffer was named NCAA Division I Men’s Diving Coach of the Year, Cesar Cielo was the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimmer of the Year and Steven Segerlin was named NCAA Division I Men’s Diver of the Year.

With its fifth straight title, Auburn ties Michigan (1937-41) and Indiana (1968-73) for most consecutive championships. Southern California has twice won four consecutive national titles.

Marsh has led the men’s team to seven national titles and has also led the Auburn women to five national titles. His 12 combined titles ties him for the most swimming and diving titles ever won by an NCAA head coach. The man he tied, Richard Quick, will assume the reins of the Auburn men’s program from Marsh.
