Track and field history probably long will honor Walter Dix’s sweep of the 100- and 200-meter dashes at this year’s Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but it might actually be his performance in the 400-meter relay that clinched Florida State’s second straight team title during the June 5-9 competition in Sacramento, California.
Florida State’s relay foursome held on to the lead that Dix opened up during his second leg of the race on the next-to-last day of competition and edged LSU by .25 seconds — and by doing so prevented the Tigers from gaining an early edge in team scoring.
“I saw Walter Dix get the baton and you could say it was a wrap from then on,” said Florida State’s Charles Clark, who ran the relay’s anchor leg. “Michael Ray (Garvin) did his thing on the curves and kept me in a good position. All I had to do was bring it home.”
A little bit later, Dix won the 100-meter dash — his second victory in three years in that event — and followed up a day later with a successful defense of his 200-meter crown to bring Florida State home with a six-point victory over the Tigers. As a bonus, Dix became the first man since John Carlos of San Jose State in 1969 to sweep the short sprints and also run on the winning 400-meter relay team.
Dix emerged tired but triumphant after a series of preliminaries and the relay victory set up his date with history.
“This is the longest week of my life,” he said. “I had to make sure my legs were healthy because I had to run every day. That’s why I took it easy in the early races. I have been here before and I know how to get the job done.”
Dix had help with that job, not only from his relay teammates but also in the 400-meter dash, where Ricardo Chambers claimed a fourth event title for Florida State, and in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Andrew Lemoncello’s second-place finish officially put his squad atop the team standings to stay.
“It’s a big relief,” Florida State coach Bob Bramen said his his team’s second straight national championship. “It’s really hard to repeat.”
LSU, which also finished second in women’s competition, claimed an individual championship with Isa Phillips’ victory in the 400-meter hurdles. Two other Southeastern Conference representatives, Auburn and Tennessee, finished third and fourth, followed by Southern California in fifth place.
Dix was the only multiple winner in men’s competition, but three other competitors joined Dix in successfully defending individual titles.
Oregon’s Thomas Skipper won his third pole vault crown in four years, while Wisconsin’s Chris Solinsky completed an indoor-outdoor sweep of the 5,000 meters in defending that title and Arizona’s Jake Arnold became the first decathlete to win two years in a row since George Mason’s Rob Muzzio in 1984 and 1985.
With two former champions (Texas’ Leonel Manzano and South Alabama’s Vincent Romo) competing in the 1,500-meter run, another repeat winner seemed likely, but Northern Arizona’s Lopez Lomong emerged with the title, following up on his 3,000-meter indoor victory in March.
Lomong saluted the crowd of more than 10,000 fans who turned out for the final day of competition in the final year of Sacramento’s three-year stint as championships host, after beating Manzano by three-tenths of a second.
“These are great fans,” he said. “They went bananas. It’s awesome to be part of this.”
