Division I notes


Rick Hursh, an Iraq veteran and student at Old Dominion University, was honored on the field at the University of Virginia during the coin toss between the Cavaliers and the University of Connecticut. Hursh lost his right thumb and suffered serious damage to his right shoulder during a suicide bomb attack December 21, 2004.

Facilities: Northern Illinois University dedicated its football press box in honor of former Sports Information Director Owen udNangle and his wife Joyce. Nangle, who died October 9, 2006, was the first Huskies SID. He also spent time as sportswriter and editor at the DeKalb Daily Chronicle, the Chicago Daily News, the Toledo Blade and the Toledo Times before returning to DeKalb for a second stint as SID. Nangle authored the code of ethics for the College Sports Information Directors of America and is a member of five halls of fame. He played basketball and baseball at Northern Illinois. ud was a first-class gentleman and an exceptional Northern Illinois man, as well as a very good friend,said Bob Brigham, who served at Northern Illinois as a student-athlete, coach, athletics director and special assistant to the president for 50 years and graduated from the university with Nangle in 1949. his honor is well-deserved. Bud carried a great deal of weight with sportswriters in Chicago and nationally. The press box should be named after him.br> Conferences: Bryant University accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference. Bryant, currently a Division II institution, is in the first year of the reclassification process. The Bulldogs will be eligible for full Division I membership in September 2012 and will play a Division I schedule in 2008-09.


Milestones: University of Florida women soccer coach Becky Burleigh knotched her 300th career victory October 12 against the University of Mississippi. Burleigh, who is in her 18th season of collegiate coaching, has a record of 301-81-25 as of October 18. She is the fifth active Division I coach and the only female to reach the milestone.


Miscellaneous: In a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, the University of Illinois, Champaign, sold pink T-shirts for its Basketball Madness event October 12 at Assembly Hall. The shirts, sold to every fan who attended the practice, were $7 each, with $2 going to the American Cancer Society. The shirts raised $40,000 and the Orange Krush student fan group also raised $7,500 for the Coaches vs. Cancer organization ... The University of Virginia joined forces with the Wounded Warrior Project to honor wounded veterans from the Middle East conflicts at an October 13 football game against the University of Connecticut. Rick Hursh, an Army veteran who was injured in a suicide bomb attack December 21, 2004, was honored during the coin toss. Hursh works at Lockheed Martin and is studying mechanical engineering at Old Dominion University. The Wounded Warrior Project is a nonprofit group that assists wounded veterans.

 

 

The Southern Utah University women’s soccer team wore pink uniforms at a game against Embry-Riddle October 13 to raise awareness of breast cancer. The team raised $1,200 for research through merchandise sales and donations. Adidas donated the special jerseys. Assembly Hall, traditionally awash in orange to support the University of Illinois, Champaign, men’s basketball team, turned pink for the first practice of 2007 as part of a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.
