Sports sponsorship: The University of Detroit Mercy will add three varsity teams beginning in 2008-09. Detroit will field teams in men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, raising its total number of sports to 19. The last sport the school added was golf in 2004. Once the teams are added, Detroit will be the only Division I institution in Michigan to sponsor varsity lacrosse teams. The men’s team is interested in joining Lacrosse America (formerly the Great Western Lacrosse League), while the women’s team is seeking membership in the American Lacrosse Conference. Mary Ann Meltzer was hired to coach the women’s squad. Detroit eliminated men’s tennis in 1995. The revitalized team will compete, like the rest of the Titan teams, in the Horizon League.
Facilities: The University of Central Florida worked with a private firm to develop a 10,000-seat convocation center, four residence halls, parking facilities and retail space on campus. The money earned from those ventures helped fund a new arena, indoor football practice facility and softball stadium. The existing gymnasium was transformed into a basketball and volleyball practice facility with two practice gyms, locker rooms, weight rooms and training facilities. The unique funding approach is believed to be the first developer-driven, mixed-use athletics project on an American collegiate campus.
Miscellaneous: The University of Southern California collaborated with the Los Angeles Dodgers to raise money and awareness for a nonprofit organization that supports cancer research at a Los Angeles hospital. Southern California plans to support ThinkCure through radio, Internet and videoboard messages during the 2007-08 athletics season. The Dodgers have supported the program, in existence since July, with special events, fund-raising and signage in Dodger Stadium. ThinkCure, the Dodgers’ official charity, was founded to find a cure for cancer. It partnered with City of Hope and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, two of the leading cancer research institutions. More ThinkCure information is available at www.thinkcure.org.
