nullFacilities: Temple University named its baseball field after former head coach Skip Wilson April 28. The school also retired Wilson’s uniform number. He led the Owls to 1,034 victories and two trips to the College World Series in 46 seasons. Wilson is the first person in program history to have his number retired ... The University of Maryland, College Park, announced it will expand Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium. The expansion will include the addition of 64 luxury suites and 500 mezzanine-level seats featuring heated and covered seating, the creation of a presidential suite with seating for 200, new work areas for the media and coaches, a new team store, enhanced seating for disabled fans and a new video board in the west end zone. The improvements are expected to cost about $50.8 million and be completed by August 2010. Though no timetable exists for future renovations, officials hope to add chairback seating in new areas, 8,000 seats in the west end zone, new restrooms and concessions, improved athletic training and locker room facilities, and to lower the playing field to improve visibility for fans seated in lower rows. Part of the funding for the project will come from luxury suite sales ... Baylor University broke ground May 10 for a $34 million practice facility and student-athlete academic center. The Alwin O. and Dorothy Highers Athletics Complex and the Simpson Athletics and Academic Center are part of the Victory with Integrity Campaign. The on-campus practice facility will bring football operations on campus for the first time in the modern era. It will feature three football practice fields and is funded with the largest single gift in Baylor’s history. The academic and athletics center will provide space for the main athletics training room, equipment room, football team locker room and weight room as well administrative offices, the football offices, meeting rooms and an academic center for all student-athletes.
Conferences: The Mid-Continent Conference will change its name to the Summit League June 1. The league will focus on recognizing academic achievements, improving APRs and increasing home-game attendance.

Miscellaneous: ... The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators recognized Missouri State University as “Best of the Best” from more than 800 entries for a promotion called “Missouri State-YMCA Character Education Card Day.” The promotion featured trading cards with Missouri State student-athletes who serve as role models. ... The University of Southern Mississippi athletics department received a $5 million gift, the largest single individual commitment at one time to the university. Southern Mississippi alum Gene Carlisle, a business owner and entrepreneur, gave the gift to assist in the construction of the South End Zone Complex at M.M. Roberts Stadium. ... The University of Cincinnati received a gift from a Cincinnati couple actively involved in Cincinnati-area athletics and arts. Max and Judi Redlich committed $3 million to establish the Max E. and Judi S. Redlich Men’s Basketball Fund to support scholarships for student-athletes in good academic standing and for operational needs. The donation will not only provide funding for men’s basketball, but it also will allow the department to reapportion operating funds toward other varsity sports ... The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics honored Frank Broyles, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, athletics director, with the NACDA/NIT Athletics Director Award ... Western Kentucky University named Host Communications its multi-media rights holder under a 10-year agreement giving Host the rights to sell, produce and distribute radio broadcasts for Hilltopper sports teams, coaches’ shows, television broadcast of competitions, game-day programs, hospitality opportunities, corporate sponsorship and Internet properties.
