Facilities: Duke University trustees named the school’s Center for Athletic Excellence after head men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Officials expect the $15.2 million facility to be completed in early 2008. The Michael W. Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence will be home to the athletics department’s academic center, two full-court practice areas, a weight room and a large event space. The center will allow multiple teams to practice and compete simultaneously. “I am extremely thankful to all of the people who have stepped forward to make this facility a reality,” Krzyzewski said. “It will be a tremendous benefit to our university and athletics department in facilitating a well-rounded and exceptional educational process for more than 600 student-athletes annually.”
Milestones: University of Tennessee, Knoxville, softball hurler Monica Abbott picked up her 152nd career victory March 3 when the Lady Vols defeated Tennessee Technological University, 4-0. Abbott broke the record for Division I career wins held by former University of Southern Mississippi student-athlete Courtney Blades. Abbott struck out 18 batters ... Texas A&M University, College Station, head softball coach Jo Evans tallied her 700th career win in the second game of a doubleheader against the University of Houston March 7.
Conferences: The Southeastern Conference and XM satellite radio announced a five-year broadcast and marketing agreement. XM will broadcast football, basketball and other sports nationwide, providing complete coverage of SEC championships. The partnership will begin this fall with live broadcasts of sports from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; the University of Georgia; the University of Kentucky; Mississippi State University; the University of Mississippi; and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The University of South Carolina, Columbia; and University of Florida will join the agreement in subsequent years. XM plans to air every regular-season football game, most basketball games and other sports ... The Gateway Football Conference will add North Dakota State University and South Dakota State University as members, bringing the league’s membership total to nine. Both schools will begin conference play in 2008. North Dakota State won the Great West Football Conference title in 2006 and South Dakota State was the league’s runner-up ... Samford University will leave the Ohio Valley Conference at the end of the 2007-08 academic year. The institution accepted an invitation to join the Southern Conference. Samford joined the OVC in 2003. Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said the departure of Stanford will not impact the stability of the league. Ten schools remain in the conference.
Miscellaneous: Stanford University announced a one-year management and consulting agreement with Learfield Sports, calling for the Dallas-based company to administer all Cardinal multimedia rights beginning July 1, 2007. Multimedia properties include live television broadcasts and coaches’ shows, corporate hospitality and venue presence, radio play-by-play broadcasts, print sponsorships, event marketing, corporate sponsorships and Web site advertising. Both parties are committed to establishing a long-term agreement ... The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association named University of Pittsburgh Senior Associate Athletics Director Carol Sprague its administrator of the year earlier this month. Sprague worked to bring the first and second rounds of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament to Pittsburgh for the first time and managed the construction of a new basketball and events facility on the school’s campus.
