More than 7,000 elementary school students were among the crowd of 8,950 at a Wichita State University women’s basketball game on December 19. The schools used the game to teach math skills.

Milestones: Kent State University men’s basketball coach Jim Christian picked up his 100th career win January 24 when his team beat Ball State University, 60-54 ... Syracuse University’s Jim Boeheim became the 22nd coach in Division I men’s basketball history to coach 1,000 games on January 27. The Orange lost a hard-fought game to Louisville, 76-71 ... North Carolina State University women’s basketball coach Kay Yow earned career victory No. 700 with a 68-51 win over Florida State February 5. Yow, in her 32nd season at North Carolina State and 36th year overall, is the sixth Division I women’s coach to reach 700 wins. She returned to the bench late last month after taking two months off to fight cancer ... University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun won his 500th game at the school on February 5. Calhoun’s Huskies beat Syracuse University, 67-60, giving him a record of 500-185 at Connecticut and 748-322 for his career. He is 12th on the Division I men’s basketball career wins list. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is 14th.
Sport sponsorship: Ohio University is eliminating four varsity sports. Men’s swimming and diving, men’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, and women’s lacrosse will be discontinued at the end of the 2006-07 academic year. The cuts leave Ohio with 16 sports, the minimum required for membership in Division I. Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt said the cuts would save $685,000. The department expects a $4 million deficit this year ... Butler University will eliminate men’s lacrosse and men’s swimming and diving. Lacrosse student-athletes will remain on scholarship through their senior years. Butler did not offer scholarships in men’s swimming and diving. Butler will sponsor 19 sports after the cuts. Butler President Bobby Fong said the change would allow the institution to focus on achieving success in the remaining sports.
Conferences: The Big Ten Conference unveiled changes to the official logo of the conference’s women’s basketball tournament. The 2007 tournament will be presented by Xbox 360. Xbox Live was the 2006 sponsor. The tournament will be March 1-5 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis ... The Horizon League launched a new Web site that provides conference information as well as Web streaming and downloadable video, designed for handhelds and mobile phones. The site, www.horizonleague.mobi, displays content customized for smaller screens with simple graphics and easy navigation. “The site is another way we are using developing technologies to reach fans and alumni with current information and free video about our teams, our student-athletes and our championships,” said Commissioner Jon LeCrone. “It presents information in a simple, easy-to-use format for anyone on the go.”
Facilities: Pennsylvania State University alumni William and Josephine Weiss donated $1 million to the institution to upgrade programs and facilities at the Penn State Center for Sports Medicine. The gift will support expansion and renovation of the center’s primary care and orthopedics wings.
