Division I committees appoint leadership positions

The Division I Board of Directors and the Management Council both filled leadership vacancies at their April meetings.
Clemson University President James F. Barker was elected chair of the Board, while Atlantic 10 Conference Associate Commissioner Jackie Campbell was named to lead the Council. In addition, Damon Evans, athletics director at the University of Georgia, was elected vice chair of the Council.
Barker is Clemson’s 14th president, inaugurated April 7,2000. He has received numerous honors for his academic and public service leadership, including South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. He was honored as a National Distinguished Professor by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and was also once a partner in an architectural practice.
Remaining true to his roots, Barker is part of a team that teaches an undergraduate course exploring a “sense of place” in architecture, literature and history each spring.
He joined the Board in January 2006 and his term extends through April 2010. Barker earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Clemson in 1970. He holds a master of architecture and urban design from Washington University in St. Louis.
Campbell replaces Kate Hickey, whose term ended. Hickey, an associate athletics director at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, served as chair for one year. Campbell’s Council term extends through April 2009.
Campbell is responsible for coordinating legislative and compliance services for Atlantic 10 members and serves as the league’s senior woman administrator.
She returned to the conference almost two years ago after serving as the associate director of athletics for student services at the University of Connecticut and the associate director of athletics for compliance at the University of Maryland, College Park. Campbell previously served as the assistant commissioner for compliance at the Atlantic 10 from 1997 through 2002. Before that, she spent six years at the NCAA national office, first as a legislative assistant and then as assistant chief of staff for Division I.
A member of the field hockey and basketball teams at the University of Virginia, Campbell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commerce. She also earned a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Evans, who earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s in sports management from Georgia, served on the Management Council first from January 2000 until January 2003. He rejoined the group in March 2006.
A former football student-athlete at Georgia, Evans worked in several different positions at the Southeastern Conference before returning to his alma mater in 1998. He was named Georgia’s senior associate athletics director for internal affairs in 2000 and promoted to athletics director on July 1, 2004.
Evans also served on the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse Committee.
