Though Brown did not win a single event, the Bears registered strong showings in enough races to win the 2007 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships May 27 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Brown’s seniors missed their graduation ceremony but carried away the school’s fifth rowing title and first since 2004. The Bears tied California last year, but the title went to California based on a higher finish in the Varsity I Eights race.

Brown used fourth-, third- and second-place finishes in the Varsity I Eights, Varsity II Eights and Fours to edge Virginia in the team standings, 58-54. The Bears became just the second squad in the history of the championship to capture the team title without winning an event. Ohio State finished one point ahead of Yale for third, while Southern California posted 48 points for fifth place.

John Murphy, head coach at Brown, credited the team’s depth for being able to win the title without the benefit of winning a race. “We have been very fortunate to have good depth,” he said. “As you can see, on a team like this it takes every single person and we are very proud of them.”

In the Varsity I Eights grand final, Yale took an early lead and never relinquished it to capture that program’s first event win at the championships with a time of 6:37.08. The victory also marked an undefeated season for the Bulldogs. The race’s drama unfolded in the battle for second place with Virginia, Southern California and Ohio State vying for the slot. Brown pushed ahead of those three shells briefly but was unable to hold off Ohio State, which finished second, and Southern California, which completed the 2000-meter course .01 seconds ahead of Brown for third. Virginia and Princeton rounded out the field at fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Minnesota crossed the finish line three-quarters of a length in front of California to win the Varsity II Eights grand final with a time of 6:59.15. Brown was third, a half length ahead of Virginia.

Brown’s best showing on the day was in the Fours. Virginia sprinted to a 10.51-second victory in the race, but Brown finished ahead of California to claim second place with a time of 7:45.54. Princeton was fourth, followed by Washington and Yale.

In the I Eights petite final, Minnesota charged ahead of Dartmouth in the final 500 meters to capture first place.

Southern California clipped Tennessee in the II Eights petite final. Yale completed the course in 7:01.10 to take third, while Harvard, Princeton and Notre Dame were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Trojans also claimed the Fours petite final over Minnesota. Third-place Tennessee crossed the finish line a half length in front of Ohio State.
