2006 (October) — The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics debuts a process for selecting the NCAA Woman of the Year that determines finalists by conference rather than by state. Under the new process, the Woman of the Year selection committee chooses from all conference nominations the top 10 winners from each division. Nine finalists — the top three from each division — are chosen from that group of 30 conference nominees. The Woman of the Year is selected from the pool of nine finalists.
The change is due to the committee’s belief that routing selections through conferences is more equitable than the previous practice of choosing one winner per state, since some states have more NCAA institutions than others. The CWA also believes that organizing the process by conference and division would give student-athletes and institutions a better chance of advancing.
