1987 (October 1) — Richard D. Schultz succeeds Walter Byers as NCAA executive director 36 years after Byers became the Association’s first CEO.
30 years ago
1977 (August) — The NCAA Council adopts a resolution for the Association to consider rejoining the U.S. Olympic Committee “subject to the development of satisfactory federal legislation.”
1977 — The NCAA Executive Committee approves a Track and Field Committee recommendation to convert to using metric standards at each division’s National Collegiate outdoor championship events (with the exception of the 440-yard relay and the mile relay).
1977 — The NCAA Council establishes a Division II Ice Hockey Championship for 1978. The action increases the total number of NCAA championships to 40 and the number of Division II championships to 13.

1972 (September 17) — The NCAA Council approves a two-division reorganization of the Association for legislative and competitive purposes. The group forwards a proposal for consideration at the 67th annual NCAA Convention in which each member institution would be classified in either Division I or Division II.
1972 — Convention delegates vote to make freshman eligible for competition in University Division football and basketball.
1972 (October) — The NCAA produces and distributes two four-minute films and four 30-second spots for conferences to use during halftime shows to educate fans about the role of college basketball officials.
1972 — Participation reports from the Olympic Games note that 194 of the 260 Olympic team athletes were either enrolled in or had been trained at NCAA member institutions.
