(September) — A study directed by the Knight Foundation Commission on
Intercollegiate Athletics corroborates earlier findings by the NCAA
indicating that success in big-time college sports has little effect on
university alumni donations or on the academic quality of applicants.
The study, conducted by Robert H. Frank, an economist and professor of
management and economics at Cornell University, refutes two popular
college sports “myths” — one suggesting that institutions with winning
teams generate more revenues than those with losing programs, and
another suggesting that winning programs prompt increased donations
from alumni or a better pool of applicants.

(September) — The student-athlete graduation rate in the federal
methodology hits 60 percent for the first time. The 60 percent rate for
Division I student-athletes also is two percentage points higher than
the graduation rate for the student body. The rate measures the
graduating class of 1995, the first subject to a higher core-course
standard (13 core courses) than previous classes.

(September) — The Divisions I and II subcommittees of the NCAA Men’s
and Women’s Track and Field Committee vote to extend to 6,000 meters
the length of the women’s cross country championships races. The
increase of 1,000 meters, or six-tenths of a mile, from the previous
championships distance was effective at the 1998 championships. The
Division III subcommittee votes to retain the 5,000-meter distance.
