2002 (August 8) — The Division II Presidents Council supports legislation proposed for the January Convention that would increase the number of high-school core courses required for initial eligibility from 13 to 14 in 2005 and increase the grade-point requirement for continuing eligibility.

20 years ago

1987 (August) — The NCAA membership eclipses the 1,000 mark after 14 new institutions are announced. The total of 1,004 includes 795 active members, 105 conferences, 51 affiliated organizations and 53 corresponding members.

1987 (August 27-28) — The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics meets for the first time after being established at the 1987 Convention. The committee, chaired by then-assistant Big Ten Conference commissioner Phyllis L. Howlett, submits about a dozen recommendations to the NCAA Council on how the Association can improve the status of women in athletics and enhance women’s athletics programs. The recommendations include increasing the administrative recognition of women administrators at member institutions through the governance structure, incorporating women in legislative discussions at member institutions and establishing an internship program at the national office for six graduate students, including at least three women.

25 years ago

1982 (September) — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference announce plans to sponsor women’s championships. The Division III ODAC begins sponsoring volleyball, field hockey, fencing, swimming, tennis and lacrosse, while the 235-member ECAC features women’s championships in cross country, basketball, swimming and lacrosse during the 1982-83 academic year for the first time in the 44-year history of the league.
