2002 (August 27) — The Secretary of Education’s Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, a panel charged with reviewing and improving the application of Title IX, conducts the first of four public hearings during which invited panelists support or oppose the proportionality prong of the “three-part test” of Title IX compliance.

1997 (August 18) — The first Division II Student-Athlete Summit is held in Denver. The summit, created to involve student-athletes more in the Division II governance process, gathers Management Council and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members for one-on-one discussions on issues and concerns.

1977 (August) — The NCAA guarantees 100 percent coverage of transportation expenses for teams and individuals in all championships.
95 years ago
1912 — The NCAA Football Rules Committee implements changes for the 1912 season that include increasing from three to four the number of downs a team has to advance the ball 10 yards, reducing the length of the field from 330 feet to 300 feet from goal to goal and increasing the value of a touchdown from five points to six.
