1952 (April 6) — The NCAA Council creates operating procedures for the Membership Committee and its Subcommittee on Infractions. The Membership Committee, established four months earlier, is designed to consider complaints filed with the Association charging the failure of a member institution to maintain the academic or athletics standards required for membership, or failure of a member to meet the conditions and obligations of membership.

1977 (April) — University of Southern California swimmer and Olympic gold medalist John Naber breaks his own American and NCAA records in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke to become the first swimmer in NCAA history to win four championships in two events.
1977 (April) — The University of Notre Dame edges defending champion New York University in the first team fence-off in the 33-year history of the National Collegiate Fencing Championships. It marks the fourth time teams were tied at the end of the title meet, but the first since a new tie-breaker rule was established after the 1971 championships.

1997 (April 15) — The NCAA Council meets in person for the final time in Tucson, Arizona, although the group continues as the Association’s policy-making body until membership restructuring become effective August 1. The group had met continuously for 75 years.

2002 (April 1) — The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee issues a blanket solicitation of athletics administrators and coaches throughout the membership to provide thoughts on the use of Native American mascots and imagery in intercollegiate athletics. The group also seeks input from the Divisions I, II and III Student-Athlete Advisory Committees; from American Indian tribes; and from selected membership committees (Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct and the three championship cabinets/committees).
2002 (April) — Attendance records are set in the early rounds of the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in the first year of implementing the “pod” approach of placing more teams closer to home in first- and second-round games. Paid attendance for the first two rounds of the championship is 460,852, a 45 percent jump over the previous year’s mark, and well over the record of 428,373 set in 1999.
