60 years ago
January 8-10, 1947 — The 41st annual Convention adopted in principle the five points of the recommendations forwarded by a Conference of Conferences. The principles more commonly known as “the Sanity Code” included amateurism, institutional control and responsibility, sound academic standards, financial aid and recruiting.

50 years ago

January 7, 1957 — The NCAA Executive Committee voted to award the finals of the first College Division national basketball championship (March 13-15) to Evansville College.

40 years ago

January 10, 1967 — Dwight D. Eisenhower, president of the United States from 1953-61, was honored as the first recipient of the NCAA Theodore Roosevelt Award, the Association’s highest honor.

35 years ago

January 8, 1972 — Freshman eligibility for basketball and football was approved.

30 years ago

January 10-12, 1977 — The 71st annual Convention rejected a Council-sponsored proposal to restructure Division I. The plan would have required institutions to maintain performance minimums in at least eight NCAA-sponsored sports, including football and basketball.

20 years ago

January 6-10, 1987 — Division I delegates to the 81st annual Convention adopted a proposal that banned athletics boosters from any involvement in recruiting.

10 years ago

January 13, 1997 — Membership restructuring was approved. The new structure, which was implemented in August, provided a more federated means of governance and an increased leadership role for chief executive officers.
