Penn State captured its 10th National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships team title at Drew March 22-25.
Penn State secured the team championship on the strength of 105 bout victories from its women’s team and a final score of 194. St. John’s (New York) was second with 176 points, followed by Columbia-Barnard with 169.
The Nittany Lions, ranked first in the nation by the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association heading into the championships, claimed their first title since 2002 and their 10th overall under head coach Emmanuil Kaidanov.
Three Nittany Lions women’s fencers advanced to medal rounds, including freshman Doris Willette, who took first in the women’s foil. Willette defeated teammate Tamara Najm in the semifinals of the foil before earning a 15-10 victory over Monika Golebiewski of St. John’s in the final. Willette finished the tournament with a 22-1 overall bout record, with her only loss coming in the first round.
In the women’s sabre, Daria Schneider of Columbia-Barnard defeated Penn State’s Caitlin Thompson in the final by a score of 15-11, while Anna Garina of Wayne State (Michigan) compiled a 21-1 overall bout mark en route to earning her third career title in the women’s epee.
Anastasia Ferdman, a third Penn State competitor in the chase for the title, fell in the third-place match in epee to close out the tournament in fourth place with an overall bout record of 14-9.
In the men’s competition, the champions in all three disciplines were decided by narrow margins. Harvard’s Tim Hagamen claimed first in the sabre after scoring a 15-14 victory over Notre Dame’s Patrick Ghattas, who was making his third straight appearance in the title match.
Ghattas took an early 3-0 lead before Hagamen was able to tie the bout, 5-5. Ghattas held an 11-9 lead after the break when Hagamen claimed four straight touches to take a 13-11 lead. Although Ghattas was able to tie the bout at 13, Hagamen went on to tally the final touch to earn the crown.
Andras Horanyi of Ohio State collected the individual men’s title in foil by beating Pennsylvania’s Ronald Berkowsky, 13-12. In epee, Wayne State’s Slava Zingerman managed to hold off Benjamin Bratton of St. John’s to earn the individual title, 15-13, after building an early 7-1 lead in the bout.
