Two national office directors move on to new positions
The NCAA News
Two NCAA directors in the brand strategies and events staff have left the national office for other positions.
Melissa Caito, who has been with the national office since 1999, is the new vice president of marketing and external relations with the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
John Johnson, also an eight-year veteran with the staff, has accepted an executive position with Short’s Travel in Kansas City, Missouri.
Caito was hired as NCAA director of licensing in 1999. She became director of brand management and licensing in 2002 when the NCAA began its branding efforts under the 11-year, bundled-rights media agreements with CBS Sports and ESPN.
In that role, Caito oversaw and administered production of the NCAA public service announcements featuring the walkout line of “There are more than 380,000 NCAA student-athletes and just about all of them will go pro in something other than sports.”
She also managed the NCAA’s community-service function in her most recent role as director of brand strategies and community relations. Caito helped develop the NCAA Home Team partnership with Habitat for Humanity that was established after hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast.
Caito joined the NCAA staff from Logo Athletic, Inc., in Indianapolis, where her responsibilities included creation and implementation of strategic marketing and communication initiatives in all media. Before that, Caito was responsible for licensing and merchandising with USA Gymnastics and for event management with the Indiana Sports Corporation.
She has a bachelor of science degree in sports marketing and management from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Johnson most recently oversaw administration of the annual NCAA Convention. He also helped promote NCAA championships via the NCAA Championships Promotional Model, and his staff administered the NCAA Honors Dinner, NCAA Woman of the Year dinner, NCAA Hoop Cities, and the Salute functions held at the Men’s and Women’s Final Fours.
In 2005-06, Johnson coordinated the strategic direction, leadership, planning and execution of the year-long activation for the NCAA Centennial celebration and for the events that celebrated the 25th anniversary of NCAA Women’s Championships.
Before his NCAA tenure, Johnson spent 10 years with the Kansas City Royals. He also served as director of intramural sports and as an instructor in the health, physical education and recreation department at the University of Kansas for two years before joining the Royals.
He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kansas.
