Skiing crown goes to team with 'outside chance'
Senior’s performance in final race clinches Dartmouth’s third national title

Sometimes it’s the unexpected victories that are sweetest.

Dartmouth Director of Skiing Cami Thompson said going into the March 8-10 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championship at the University of New Hampshire’s Attitash-Bear Peak that there was an “outside chance” that the Big Green could take the title. That outside chance became a 100 percent certainty when senior Lindsay Mann took fourth place in the women’s slalom, sealing the team title in her final collegiate race.

Denver, the 2005 champion, was 50 points behind in second place, followed by last year’s winner, Colorado. The championship is the first for Dartmouth since 1976 and the first for an eastern team since Vermont won in 1994. It is Dartmouth’s third skiing title since 1958.

“Just awesome … great. I can’t think of any other way to put it,” Thompson said. “Every single one of them performed as well as they possibly could.”

The victory in the national championships at the University of New Hampshire’s Attitash-Bear Peak could not have been a complete surprise to Thompson and the Big Green — Dartmouth was undefeated heading into the championship, including its first Eastern Championship since 1975.

The Big Green got a strong performance from junior Dave Chodounsky, the 2005 men’s slalom champion. Chodounsky finished in second place, just .04 seconds behind the two-run time of Denver’s Adam Cole. Teammate and senior Evan Weiss finished eighth.

Chodounsky’s run was not without intrigue, as he was initially disqualified when he appeared to straddle a gate during his first run. The video review showed that he cleared the gate.

“The snow changed consistency a bit, and I slid, then hooked up a bit, then got shot out,” he said. “I’m not exactly sure what happened, but it could have been worse.”
Dartmouth held a 38-point advantage heading into the final two races — the men’s and women’s slaloms. After the men’s race, Mann said she knew the championship was within reach if she had a strong performance, but she didn’t feel pressure.
“This is my last race, and (women’s Alpine coach) Christine (Booker) told me to just go for it and have fun,” Mann said.

Booker said she always tells Mann to have fun — it makes her ski faster. Mann’s fourth-place finish was reinforced by a 10th-place run by Michelanne Shields.

The Nordic skiers fared well, also, with all three placing in the top 10 in the women’s five-kilometer freestyle, despite bitter cold and wind delaying the start of racing. Dartmouth also placed a skier in the top 10 in the men’s 10-kilometer freestyle. Dartmouth’s Susan Dunklee earned a top-10 placement in the women’s 15-kilometer classical with a seventh-best time of 49:27.5. Teammates Sara Studebaker and Elsa Sargent finishing 11th and 12th, respectively. On the men’s side, Benjamin True finished fifth and Michael Sinnott eighth in the 20-kilometer classical.

While Nordic skiers said the wind wasn’t much of a factor, the giant slalom skiers on the second day of competition said the wind definitely affected their performance. Evans Weiss, a senior and former Olympian, said the conditions impacted different skiers differently.

“It was blowing upwards of 40 miles an hour, but it was in and out, so some guys had to fight it and others didn’t,” he said after finishing second to Cole in the giant slalom. On the women’s side, Shields finished in the top 10 for Dartmouth.

“This team has come together like it never has,” said Dartmouth men’s Nordic coach Ruff Patterson. “We were solid in all four groups, and it has taken us a long time to get to this point. It seems like everything just came together for us here for many reasons. This has just been mind-boggling and wonderful.”
