Beginning in January 2008, the national office will change The NCAA News from a printed biweekly newspaper to a daily online format. The shift from print to online coincides with an increased commitment to provide information to the membership and public more expediently.

“It also is consistent with several elements of the NCAA strategic plan and with how our member institutions and conferences communicate with their own constituents,” NCAA President Myles Brand said.

In addition to the more contemporary online delivery of News content, the national office’s branding and communications staff will create a new printed publication, to be known as Champion magazine, that will be published each quarter. The first edition of Champion will be available at the 2008 Convention.

While the online version of the News will continue to cover developments deriving from the Association’s governance structure and related topics, Champion magazine will be designed to call greater attention to telling the NCAA story through its people and programs. The new magazine also will provide in-depth examinations of important issues and a chronicle of key developments within the Association over the previous quarter.

“These are major communication changes that the staff and I have considered carefully,” Brand said. “The News has existed in its current tabloid newspaper format since 1964, and we are all aware of the acceptance and value it has within the membership and other audiences. However, we cannot stand still simply because the status quo is comfortable — especially when it comes to communicating the Association’s work and dynamic ‘real-time’ issues.”

Another focus in the new communication dynamic is increased development of new media communication initiatives.

“I expect the result to be communication that will make the Association’s purpose, policies and programs easier for the public and membership to understand and support,” Brand said.

NCAA News Editor-in-Chief David Pickle said the newspaper will stop accepting new subscriptions immediately. Those who have purchased subscriptions that extend beyond December 2007 will be given a year’s subscription to Champion magazine at no additional charge. Institutional personnel who have been receiving the printed NCAA News as part of membership dues payments will receive Champion magazine under the same procedures, Pickle said.

“The nature of communication is changing rapidly,” Pickle said. “It’s clear that readers increasingly expect their information quickly through the Internet. At the same time, print still has a value that we hope to meet through the new magazine.”

The first edition of the printed NCAA News was published in March 1964. The frequency of the paper in those early years grew from only three to six times annually during the mid-1960s, to monthly later that decade and then 13 to 16 times annually during the 1970s. From 1982 through 1998, the News was printed 46 times a year (including weekly during the academic year), before changing to its current frequency of 26 times annually (biweekly) to make greater use of news delivery via the Internet and a successful classified-advertising component through NCAA Online.
