The first meeting of the Secretary of Education's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics, conducted August 27-28 in Atlanta, provided the commission with a preliminary look of the work it has before it.
The commission was announced June 27 by U.S. Department of Education Secretary Rod Paige. Subsequent meetings at which the public may comment will be conducted in Chicago (September 17-18); Colorado Springs, Colorado (October 22-23); and San Diego (November 20-21).
The NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Rules Committee has created a rules interpretations Web site to provide the soccer community with a better way to seek answers to rules questions. The Web site is at http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/governance/sports_and_rules_ctees/soccer/rules_interp/index.html. The site will be updated with new interpretations weekly or on an as-needed basis.
Coaches, referees and other athletics personnel with questions are first requested to check the Web site when seeking an interpretation. For all other inquiries, contact Cliff McCrath, secretary-rules editor, by phone at 206/281-2968 or via e-mail at cmccrath@spu.edu.

The Division II Project Team to Review Issues Related to Diversity recently reviewed minority participation rates for student-athletes and compared them with hiring rates for minority coaches in Division II.
The examination showed significant differences between the groups in basketball, football and track.
The project team plans to examine why so few basketball, football and track coaches are minorities, even though minority participation in those sports is high.
