Chief executive officers

 

Clarke chose Joanne Burrows as president, effective July 1. Burrows has been chief academic officer and academic dean at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College … Mary Washington named William J. Frawley as president, effective July 1. Frawley was dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at the school … Brian Levin-Stankevich was announced as chancellor at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, effective July 1. Most recently, Levin-Stankevich has served as interim president at Eastern Washington … Carolyn Winstead Meyers was selected as president at Norfolk State. Meyers was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at North Carolina A&T … Nyack appointed Michael G. Scales, vice president for advancement at the Master’s College, as president … Potsdam State chose John F. Schwaller as president, effective July 1. Schwaller was vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean at Minnesota Morris … Robert Shelton was named as president at Arizona, effective July 1. Shelton has been executive vice chancellor and provost at North Carolina … Augsburg President William V. Frame announced plans to retire, effective this summer. Paul C. Pribbenow, president at Rockford, was chosen as Frame’s successor … Larry E. Rivers was appointed as president at Fort Valley State. Rivers has been dean of the college of arts and sciences at Florida A&M.

 

Directors of athletics

 

Dan Radakovich was hired as director of athletics at Georgia Tech to succeed Dave Braine. Radakovich has been senior associate athletics director at LSU for the past four years … Joseph M. Kurey accepted additional responsibilities as director of athletics at Bethany (West Virginia). Kurey, who will continue to serve as senior vice president and treasurer, has held various positions in the university’s administration since graduating from the school in 1962 … Colorado State’s Mark Driscoll resigned … St. John’s (Minnesota) elevated Tom Stock to director of athletics, effective April 15. Since 2001, Stock, who replaces Timothy Backous, has served as director of athletics marketing and fund-raising, responsibilities he will continue to oversee … Michael Ricciardi was chosen as acting director of athletics at Ramapo.

 

Associate director of athletics

 

Ramapo announced Kathleen Finnegan as acting associate director of athletics.

 

Assistant directors of athletics

 

Mercy tabbed William Sullivan as assistant athletics director for internal operations. Sullivan will continue as head baseball coach at the school, a position he has held since 1995 … Keith Buckley was promoted to assistant athletics director for academic leadership and director of physical education and Margie Sullivan was hired as assistant athletics director for compliance and program assessment at Rollins. Buckley will continue as head men’s soccer coach, a position he has held since 1991. Sullivan was coordinator of intercollegiate athletics at Florida State.

 

Coaches

 

Men’s basketball – Hiram’s Tim Rice resigned after three years as head coach. Rice has been with the school since 2003 and formerly served as head women’s golf coach and men’s and women’s cross country coach for the Terriers … Doug Oliver resigned after eight seasons as head coach at Idaho State, effective at the end of the season … Rick McCormick resigned as head coach at Arkansas Tech. McCormick has been in charge of the program since May 2003 … Mount St. Mary’s awarded a contract extension to head coach Milan Brown. Brown has guided Mountaineer squads to Northeast Conference playoff appearances in two of his three seasons as head coach … Craig Rasmuson resigned as head men’s basketball coach at Northern Colorado to become director of athletics development at the school. Rasmuson took over the program before the start of the 1999-00 season … Colorado College’s Mike McCubbin resigned after eight seasons as head coach … Dick Bennett, head coach at Washington State, announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the season. Bennett has been in charge of the program since March 2003 and formerly was head coach at Wisconsin. The school announced assistant coach and Dick Bennett’s son, Tony Bennett, as head coach … Morehead State’s Kyle Macy resigned as head coach after nine seasons … Weber State released head coach Joe Cravens.  Cravens, who compiled a 116-88 record in nine seasons, will be reassigned within the athletics department.

 

Women’s basketball – Monica Severson resigned as head coach at Wartburg. Severson compiled a record of 335-131 and led teams to five Iowa Conference championships in 17 seasons … Texas Tech head women’s basketball coach Marsha Sharp announced plans to resign at the end of the season. In 24 seasons, Sharp, a 2003 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, has directed Red Raider squads to 16 straight NCAA tournament berths, four Elite Eight appearances and the 1993 national championship. Texas Tech has compiled a 570-187 record under Sharp’s leadership … Ashley Smith resigned after six seasons as head coach at Texas Lutheran … Buffalo State head coach Jerome Moss stepped down after four seasons in charge of the program.

 

Football assistants – Northwestern added Bret Ingalls as offensive line coach and Matt MacPherson as running backs coach. Ingalls, who succeeds James Patton, spent last season as tight ends coach and tackles coach at Miami (Ohio) and MacPherson was safeties coach at Eastern Michigan for two years. The school also announced wide receivers coach Garrick McGee was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to replace Mike Dunbar, and running backs coach Kevin Johns will take over as wide receivers coach … Dave Warner was hired as quarterbacks coach at Cincinnati. Warner was wide receivers coach at Southern Mississippi in 2003-04 and formerly was an assistant at Houston, Connecticut, Wyoming, Bucknell, Kansas and Kent State … Texas Tech named Brian Mitchell as an assistant coach to replace the late Dave Brown. Mitchell has been cornerbacks coach at BYU for 11 years … North Dakota State’s Casey Bradley resigned as defensive coordinator. Bradley has been an assistant with the program for 10 years, including the past six as assistant head coach. The school announced Mack Garza as Bradley’s successor as defensive coordinator. Garza has been defensive backs coach for the Bison … Midwestern State added Rich Renner as defensive line coach and Steve DeMasi as offensive line coach. For the past six years, Renner, who replaces Bryan Cross, has worked as linebackers coach, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at West Texas A&M. DeMasi, who succeeds Geep Wade, was a graduate assistant offensive line coach at Virginia Tech for three seasons … Jeff Hammerschmidt was added as outside linebackers coach and special teams coach at Stanford. Most recently, Hammerschmidt has been an assistant at Cal Poly … Tom McMahon and Chris Tabor resigned as assistant coaches at Utah State … Buffalo selected Gerald Carr as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Carr, who takes over for Alex Van Pelt, formerly was an assistant head coach and running backs coach at Baylor. The program also announced the resignation of defensive coordinator Charlie Jackson. In addition, linebackers coach Jimmy Williams will move to defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach R. Todd Littlejohn will move to defensive backs coach … Bill Wilt was named as defensive line coach at Southern Mississippi. Wilt was an assistant coach at Marshall from 1999 to 2004. Southern Mississippi also announced that defensive coordinator and secondary coach Jay Hopson will take over as middle linebackers coach Lytrel Pollard will move to secondary coach. Fred Tate, defensive tackles coach, moved to outside linebackers coach … Illinois chose Vince Okruch as defensive coordinator to replace Mike Mallory. Okruch spent the past season as linebackers coach at Louisiana-Monroe and formerly has coached at Colorado, Minnesota and Northwestern … Al Logan was added as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Muskingum. From 2004 to 2006, Logan worked as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wittenberg.

 

Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Jonathan Deptula resigned as head men’s coach at Wentworth Institute, effective June 16. Deptula has led the Leopards to a 36-24-4 record since taking over in March 2004.

 

Rowing – Chris O’Brien was named as head coach at Philadelphia U. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition this fall.

 

Men’s soccer – Ben Freakley assumed responsibilities as head coach at VMI. For the past two seasons, Freakley, who takes over for Stephen Ross, has been in charge of the program at Erskine.

 

Men’s soccer assistantMidwestern State tabbed Lance Thompson as an assistant coach to replace Alan Koch. Thompson has been head men’s soccer coach and director of athletics at Holy Names University for the past two seasons.

 

Women’s soccerIdaho State selected Allison Gibson as head coach.

 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Richard Stockton added Allison Walker as head women’s coach to replace Eric Illjes. Most recently, Walker has served as an assistant girls’ coach at the high school level.

 

Staff

 

Academic services – Ryan Kelley accepted responsibilities as academic coordinator at Wayne State (Michigan). Kelley will continue as an assistant baseball coach, a post he has filled for four seasons.

 

Assistant athletic trainer – Chicago tabbed Jessica John as assistant athletic trainer and personal fitness trainer. John was a wellness coordinator at a Chicago-area health center.

 

Facilities assistant – Jack Morelan was tabbed as assistant director for facilities at Northwestern. For the past 10 months, Morelan has served as general manager of the Tucson Sportspark, a private outdoor event facility in Arizona.

 

Marketing and promotions assistant – Kristy Fletcher was hired as assistant director of athletics marketing at Delaware to replace Mark Gazdik.

 

Conferences

 

The Pacific-10 Conference promoted Dave Hirsch to assistant commissioner for communications and men’s basketball administration, Bri Niemi to assistant commissioner of communications, Tammy Newman to assistant commissioner for governance and enforcement, Erik Price to assistant commissioner for compliance and Sandy Safford to assistant commissioner for office management. The league also chose Lina Diaz as assistant director of business and finance … Longtime Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association supervisor of football and basketball officials Joe Cooper stepped down to assume new responsibilities as assistant to the commissioner on officiating. Cooper joined the league as a football referee and basketball official in 1960 and took over as supervisor of officials for football and men’s basketball in 1971. Seven years later, Cooper’s duties were extended to include women’s basketball. 

 

National office

 

Victor Hill was selected as manager of corporate alliances at the NCAA. Hill has been an assistant athletics director at Cleveland State … Jaime Fluker was named as an assistant director in the office for diversity and inclusion at the national office. Fluker has been an intern in the governance group.

 

Corrections

 

In the story announcing the two-year APR data in the February 27 NCAA News, the percentage of teams penalized should have been listed as fewer than 2 percent rather than 1 percent. Also, in the chart listing average APRs by sport, women's soccer (971) and softball (966) were inadvertently omitted ... The first name of  Carthage College men’s baskeetball coach Bosko Djurickovic was misspelled in the Division II notes of the February 27 issue.

 

Deaths

 

Former Southern Illinois President James E. Walker died February 5. Walker was 64.

 

Bill Miller, former athletics director and head football coach at Texas State, died February 20. He was 74. Miller joined the Bobcat football staff as an assistant coach in 1961 and took over as head coach in 1964. He guided teams to a 94-53-3 record in 14 years and also was athletics director from 1975 until his retirement in 1992. Miller played fullback for the Bobcats before graduating in 1957. He also earned a master’s degree at Texas State.

 

Former longtime broadcaster Curt Gowdy died of leukemia February 20. He was 86. Gowdy, a standout basketball and tennis student-athlete at Wyoming, called numerous NCAA men’s basketball championships and Rose Bowl games as well as seven Super Bowls and 10 consecutive World Series from 1966-75. He also broadcast Oklahoma games.

 

Former Ohio student-athlete and coach Kermit Blosser died February 18. He was 95. Blosser, a 1932 NCAA national champion wrestler in the 191-pound weight class, was the first Ohio student-athlete to win a national championship in any sport. He also was a member of a three-time Buckeye Conference championship team that posted back-to-back undefeated seasons and suffered just one loss in three seasons. Later an assistant football, basketball and wrestling coach at the school, Blosser was part of Ohio’s first Mid-American Conference football championship in 1953 and four MAC basketball championships. In addition, as the Bobcat’s first head golf coach, he led the program to 18 conference titles.

 

Former Southern California football student-athlete Travis Claridge died February 28. He was 27. Claridge started 48 games at right guard for the Trojans and earned recognition as the top offensive lineman in the Pacific-10 Conference in 1999. Most recently, Claridge was a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.
