Presidents/chancellors

 

Emporia State President Kay Schallenkamp was named as president at Black Hills State.

 

Directors of athletics

 

Jim Copeland announced plans to retire as director of athletics at Southern Methodist, effective May 31. Copeland, who formerly was an athletics administrator at Virginia, Utah, William and Mary, and Missouri, has been in charge of the Southern Methodist athletics department since 1994 … Steve Sloan, director of athletics at Chattanooga, announced his retirement, effective in May. Sloan formerly was athletics director at Alabama, Central Florida and North Texas … Cal State Dominguez Hills appointed Patrick Guillen as athletics director. Guillen, who has been with the school since 1995, has been acting director of athletics since November 1.

 

Associate director of athletics

 

Washington promoted Leslie Wurzberger to associate athletics director. Wurzberger has been with the school since 1996 and most recently has been assistant athletics director overseeing marketing, advertising, branding and ticket sales.

 

Assistant directors of athletics

 

Frank Harris announced plans to retire as assistant athletics director and director of athletics facilities at The College of New Jersey. Harris has been with the school since 1980 … Tom Klusman assumed additional responsibilities as assistant athletics director at Rollins. Klusman will continue to serve as head men’s basketball coach, a position he has held since 1980.

 

Coaches

 

Baseball assistant – Walter Dacuycuy was named as an assistant coach at Franklin and Marshall.

 

Men’s basketball – Villanova awarded head coach Jay Wright with a seven-year contract extension through 2012-13. Wright has been in charge of the Wildcat program since 2001.

 

Football – West Virginia State’s Carl Lee resigned as head coach … Rose-Hulman promoted Steve Englehart to head coach to replace Ted Karras Jr. Since 2003, Englehart has served as offensive coordinator and also has been quarterbacks coach … Idaho hired Dennis Erickson as head coach to replace Nick Holt, who resigned after two seasons and became defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Southern California. Erickson formerly was head coach at the school from 1982 to 1985 … Eastern Oregon chose Ian Shields as head coach to replace Jim Fenwick. Shields has been offensive coordinator at Cal Poly.

 

Football assistants – George Darlington was appointed as defensive backs coach at Louisiana Tech. For the past three seasons, Darlington has worked as recruiting coordinator and safeties coach at Marshall … Minnesota added Craig Bray as secondary coach and Mark Criner as linebackers coach. Bray most recently has been an assistant at Colorado and Criner was defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State last season. In addition, assistant head coach and outside linebackers coach Moe Ankeny retired, the program awarded offensive coordinator Mitch Browning with additional responsibilities as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator David Lockwood accepted additional duties as outside linebackers coach. Lockwood will continue to serve as defensive coordinator … Ryan Leaf was hired as quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M. Leaf played in the NFL from 1998 to 2002 … Concordia (Illinois) tabbed Erich Janousky as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Since 2001, Janousky has been offensive coordinator at Milwaukee (Wisconsin) Lutheran High School … Auburn selected Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator and James Willis as linebackers coach. Muschamp, formerly defensive coordinator at LSU, spent this past season as assistant head coach of defense for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Most recently, Willis has been linebackers coach at Temple and formerly was linebackers coach at Rhode Island from 2003 to 2005 … Ron English was elevated to defensive coordinator at Michigan. The school also named Ron Lee as cornerbacks coach and Steve Szabo as linebackers coach. English, who was secondary coach for the Wolverines, takes over for Jim Hermann. For the past three seasons, Lee has been defensive backs coach at Wisconsin, and Szabo joins the Wolverines after being released as defensive backs coach for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills … A.J. Christoff was added as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Stanford. Last season, Christoff was defensive backs coach for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and formerly was an assistant for the Cardinal in 1983 and in 2003-04 … Purdue promoted Bill Legg to offensive coordinator to succeed Jim Chaney. Legg, who has completed three seasons as a member of the Boilermakers staff, will continue to serve as offensive line coach … John Wristen was selected as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator at UCLA. Wristen has been an assistant at Colorado for seven years, most recently serving as tight ends coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator … Georgia Tech appointed Charles Kelly as special teams coordinator. For the past four years, Kelly has been an assistant at Nicholls State. The school also announced Geoff Collins as director of player personnel. Collins has been defensive coordinator at Western Carolina for four seasons and formerly was a graduate assistant coach and tight ends coach for the Yellow Jackets from 1999-01 … Bruce Bell retired as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, and Van Malone and Duke Atterberry resigned as defensive backs coach and tight ends coach, respectively, at North Texas. The program also chose Fred Bleil as defensive coordinator to succeed Kenny Evans, who was elevated to assistant head coach … Oklahoma selected James Patton as offensive line coach. Patton, who takes over for Darrell Wyatt, has been offensive line coach at Northwestern. The school also announced offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will coach tight ends and fullbacks, and tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin will move to receivers coach and assume responsibilities as co-offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator … Miami (Florida) added John Palermo as defensive line coach and Clint Hurtt as assistant defensive line coach. Palermo has been assistant head coach at Wisconsin for 15 years and Hurtt worked as defensive line coach at Florida International last season … Chris Rorke was chosen as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Trinity (Connecticut). For the past three years, Rorke has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Lehigh … UCLA elevated Jim Svoboda to offensive coordinator and appointed Jim Colletto as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach. Svoboda, who succeeds Tom Cable, has been quarterbacks coach for two seasons, and Colletto most recently has been offensive line coach for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders … Northern Illinois named Jeff Phelps as defensive interior line coach. Phelps, who was an assistant coach at Hillsdale from 2003 to 2005, replaces Derrick Jackson.

 

Men’s and women’s golf – Shepherd hired Craig Callens as head men’s coach ... Alison Wright was chosen as head women’s coach at Longwood. Most recently, Wright has been an assistant at Ball State.

 

Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Bridgewater State named Erika Smith as head women’s coach. Smith, who also is an assistant field hockey coach at the school, is a 2005 graduate of Bridgewater State, where she was a four-year starter on the lacrosse and field hockey squads ... Lynne Nester appointed women’s coach at East Stroudsburg, her alma mater. She coached last year at Alvernia

 

Men’s soccer – Columbia appointed Leo Chappel as head coach to succeed Dieter Ficken. For the past five seasons, Chappel has been top assistant at UC Santa Barbara.

 

Women’s soccer – Jane Hoops was hi-red as head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan. Hoops, who takes over for Taylor Haynes, was an assistant coach with the program in 2005 … Brianne Weaver was tabbed as head coach at St. Mary’s (Maryland) to replace Mark Mermelstein, who resigned.

 

Men’s and women’s tennis – Ki Kroll was selected as head men’s coach at Vassar. Kroll, who most recently has been interim head coach, succeeds the retired Roman Czula.

 

Men’s and women’s track and field assistant – Saint Rose chose Meaghan Gregory as assistant track and field coach and athletics administrator for compliance.

 

Men’s and women’s water polo – Gavin Arroyo was appointed as head men’s coach at Long Beach State. Arroyo, a two-time member of the U.S. men’s Olympic water polo team, has been an assistant coach at California for the past three years.

 

Staff

 

Athletic trainer – Danny Sterling accepted responsibilities as head athletic trainer at Longwood. Sterling was head athletic trainer and an assistant athletics director at the University of Virginia at Wise.

 

Development – Holy Cross named Scott Graham as athletics fund-raising coordinator. Graham has been assistant director of marketing and promotions at Northeastern since 2004 … Joe Velasco was hired as executive director of the athletics association at Florida International. Most recently, Velasco has been vice president of channel sales and director of alliances at Terremark Worldwide.

 

Facilities – Matt Ducharme was chosen as a fitness center assistant at Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

 

Conferences

 

Tom Fielder was announced as coordinator of men’s basketball officials for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Fielder, a principal at Eau Claire North (Wisconsin) High School, has been a men’s basketball official in the league since 1982 and was a WIAC women’s basketball official from 1979 to 2000. He replaces the retiring Don Page.

 

Associations

 

Sam Robertson resigned as director of corporate partnerships at the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

 

Deaths

 

Former Nevada men’s basketball coach Jim Carey died of congestive heart failure on February 4. He was 76. Carey was in charge of the Wolf Pack from 1976 to 1980 and guided the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason tournament.

 

Former Oregon State men’s basketball player Wally Palmberg died February 12 at the age of 93. Palmberg earned all-American and all-Pacific Coast Conference recognition in 1936.

 

Former Oklahoma State athletics administrator and senior woman administrator Ann Baer died of cancer.

 

Lewis “Bud” McFadin, former offensive and defensive lineman at Texas, died February 13 at the age of 77. McFadin was an all-American and all-Southwest Conference pick for the Longhorns who went on to become a five-time Pro Bowl selection as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.

 

Jerry Parker, former football student-athlete at Wyoming, died February 4. He was 77. Parker, who became a Wyoming state representative, was a member of the Broncos 1950 undefeated team that won the Gator Bowl. 

 

Former Mississippi head football coach John Vaught died in early February. He was 96. Vaught led the Rebels to six Southeastern Conference championships and 18 bowl games during a tenure that stretched from 1947 to 1970. He also coached part of Mississippi’s 1973 season.

 

Elmer “Lee” BeDillon, former track and field student-athlete at Pittsburg State, died February 3. BeDillon set a school record time of 1:51.44 in the 880-yard run in 1935, which still stands as the four-fastest time in school history.

 

Thomas M. Ellis, a former assistant women’s rowing coach at Delaware, died of cancer February 7. He was 44. Ellis was an assistant coach for the Blue Hens from 1998 to 2003 and also coached the lightweight men’s and women’s club teams. A 1984 graduate of Temple, where he competed as a coxswain for the rowing team, Ellis formerly was a member of the U.S. National Team.
