Chancellors and presidents
Robert Potts was named chancellor of Arkansas State’s main campus, effective November 15. Potts previously served as chancellor of the North Dakota system … Rosemont selected Sharon Latchaw Hirsh as president.
Director of athletics
Albion hired Lisa Roschek as interim athletics director. Roschek is in the midst of her ninth season as head women’s soccer coach. She replaces David Hawsey.
Associate directors of athletics
Maine named Joe Roberts, Leslie Ricker and Will Biberstein as associate directors of athletics. Roberts has been a member of the athletics department for the past 17 years, most recently serving as director of athletics development. He will now work as associate athletics director for external operations. Ricker comes to Maine after spending the last two years as compliance director and executive assistant to the athletics director at Eckerd. She will serve as Maine’s associate athletics director for compliance. Biberstein has worked as associate athletics director for facilities on an interim basis since last October and will now assume the position in a permanent capacity … Phil Racicot will be Duquesne’s new associate athletics director for administration
Assistant directors of athletics
North Carolina named Amy Herman assistant athletics director for compliance. Herman, in her sixth year in the compliance office, has previously held the positions of assistant director and director of compliance. She earned her master’s in sports administration from North Carolina in 2001 … Matt Sweeney has been named assistant athletics director for communications at Seton Hall … Duquesne named Sherene Lemonias assistant athletics director for student services.
Coaches
Men’s basketball – Ohio State head coach Thad Matta agreed to a contract extension … Texas Tech’s Bob Knight signed a contract extension keeping him with the school through the 2012 season.
Men’s basketball assistants – Misericordia added Corey Brown and Jerry Blazick to its staff … Arizona named Matt Brase as its administrative assistant and video coordinator. Jesse Mermuys was also added to the Wildcat staff and will serve as director of basketball operations … Guilford added Matt Parke and Matt Ridge to its coaching staff … Eight years after hitting one of the most well-known shots in NCAA tournament history, Bryce Drew has been promoted to associate head coach of his alma mater, Valparaiso. The former NBA player served as an assistant coach last season and is the school’s all-time leader in points, assists and three-point field goals made. His father, Homer, is Valparaiso’s head coach.
Women’s basketball – Stanford signed head coach Tara VanDerveer to a six-year contract extension that will keep her with the program through 2012 … North Dakota women’s basketball coach Gene Roebuck signed a three-year contract extension. The deal will keep the veteran coach in Grand Forks through 2009. Roebuck has compiled a 498-85 record and three Division II national championships in his 19 years at the helm of the program … Syracuse named Quentin Hillsman head coach.
Women’s basketball assistants – Lindsay Baker was tabbed as an assistant at Misericordia … Tennessee Tech added Misty Garrett.
Men’s and women’s cross country – Assumption named Gary Jusseaume interim head cross country and track and field coach. An assistant with the program for the last four years, Jusseaume is in his second stint with the Greyhounds after coaching both sports from 1975-81. He replaces Mark Perrone.
Football – Southeastern Louisiana head coach Dennis Roland has taken a medical leave of absence. Michael Lucas was named interim head coach.
Men’s and women’s gymnastics – Aaron Murphy was selected as head women’s coach at Temple.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey – Ron Fogarty has been named the first men’s ice hockey coach at Adrian. Fogarty spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at Bowling Green and has also worked at Clarkson and Colgate. He played four years of varsity ice hockey at Colgate and went on to play one season of professional hockey in the Central Hockey League. Adrian will begin competing at the Division III level during the 2007-08 season.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistants – Worcester State named Bob Thebeau men’s assistant coach.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Alison Bruno was named head women’s coach at Philadelphia U. Bruno previously served as the university’s head coach from 1988-90 and succeeds Christy Malone, who resigned in the off-season
Men’s and women’s lacrosse assistants – Colgate selected Karrie Moore for the women’s team.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – David Marsh, director of competitive aquatics at Auburn, will resign at the end of the season to serve as head elite coach and CEO of the United States Olympic Committee Center of Excellence and the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club.
Men’s and women’s track and field – After coaching the Connecticut College women’s cross country program for the past 22 years, Ned Bishop will take the reins of the Camel track and field program this season.
Men’s and women’s track and field assistants – Dennis Darling has joined the Texas-Pan American coaching staff. He is a three-time Olympian … Northern Colorado hired Karim Abdel Wahab.
Wrestling assistant – Ryan Bertin was tabbed as an assistant coach at Northwestern. A two-time NCAA champion while at Michigan, Bertin ranks fifth on the school’s all-time win list.
Staff
Athletic trainer – Catholic hired Lauren Hayne to head its athletic training department. She had been Assumption’s assistant athletics director for sports medicine. She holds degrees from Penn State and Old Dominion. At Catholic, she will be running the training room and planning and supervising the rehabilitation process for all of the institution’s student-athletes.
Development – Westfield State tabbed David Caspole as senior development coordinator for athletics.
Facilities – Erik Weiler was selected as director of facilities at Loyola (Illinois). He succeeds Eric Simpson, who joined the men’s basketball staff.
Sports information – Hood hired Adrienne Gonzales to be its new sports information director. Gonzales will manage media relations for all 19 men’s and women’s varsity athletics teams. She graduated from Hollins in 1997 and has worked previously at Army, Manhattan, St. John’s (New York), West Virginia and Towson. She also worked with the Baltimore Ravens.
Sports information assistant – Mallory Haynes was chosen as assistant director of athletics media relations at Southern Mississippi, effective October 23. She replaced Jared Florreich, who was named assistant director for communications with the Southland Conference.
Strength and conditioning – William Wuyke was named strength and conditioning coach at Connecticut College … Loyola (Illinois) tabbed Ryan Carroll as head strength and conditioning coach. He replaces Dave Vitel.
Conferences
The Ohio Valley Conference tabbed Kyle Schwartz as assistant commissioner for media relations. Schwartz replaces Kim Melcher, who left earlier this month to become director of communications for the Mountain West Conference.
Associations
The Orange Bowl named Jeff Purinton director of media relations and communications.
Deaths
Former Arizona State athletics director Donn Kinzie has died … Former McNeese State all-American running back Darrell Lester died at the age of 65 … Former Georgia football player and coach Sam Mrvos passed away at the age of 76 … Former Chaminade men’s basketball coach Pete Smith died October 17 … Former Washington running back Ernie Steele died at age 89.
