Virginia Tech hired Pete Hughes as its new baseball coach. He replaces Chuck Hartman, who retired after 28 seasons at the helm of the program.

Hughes spent the past eight seasons as head coach at Boston College, compiling a 250-181-2 record during his tenure. In 2005, he led the Eagles to a school-record 37 wins and his team was named Division I New England Baseball Team of the Year.

A two-time Big East Coach of the Year, Hughes was also the New England Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2005. During his eight years at Boston College, 15 players signed professional contracts.

Before his arrival in Chestnut Hill, Hughes spent two years at Trinity (Texas) and led the program to a school-record 33 victories in his second and final season.
