Former Elmira women’s ice hockey standout Laura Hurd died in an automobile accident June 25.
The first four-time all-American in Division III women’s ice hockey, Hurd graduated in 2005 as Elmira’s all-time leading scorer with 120 goals and 117 assists. Both marks are records.
During Hurd’s four-year career, the Soaring Eagles won a pair of national titles and compiled an overall record of 90-8-5.
Division III women’s ice hockey began competition in 2002, and Elmira came flying out of the gates, going 26-1-1 and defeating Manhattanville, 2-1, in the inaugural championship. In 2003, Elmira again defeated Manhattanville and claimed its second consecutive national championship.
An honor scholar who majored in economics and business administration, Hurd won Elmira’s Class of 1927 prize, which is given to a woman at the end of her freshman year who best exemplifies the spirit of the college.
After graduating, Hurd went to work as a team leader in the environmental product division of Corning Incorporated.
