Sue Enquist has announced her retirement as softball coach at UCLA. Enquist, who has won 11 national championships as a player and coach with the program, will end her tenure January 1, 2007.

A 1980 graduate, Enquist was the program’s first all-American player and the first softball student-athlete inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame. She has served on the Bruins’ coaching staff since her graduation, taking over as head coach in 1997 after eight seasons as co-head coach with Sharron Backus.

Since taking over in 1997, Enquist has led the Bruins to three national titles and seven appearances in the NCAA championship game. She leaves the program with a career record of 887-175-1.

Enquist will stay with the athletics department as director of major gifts for the external relations office. Kelly Inouye-Perez will take over as head coach after 13 years as an assistant.
