During the past two weeks, the official blog of the NCAA has added video files and will continue to expand this type of content.
The first videos posted on the Double-A Zone include a segment from "NCAA On Campus" about Indiana University, Bloomington, field hockey player Meredith Brown; a four-minute clip from the NCAA Woman of the Year event; and footage from NCAA President Myles Brand’s pre-recorded National Press Club speech on the release of the report from the Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Intercollegiate Athletics.
Within the next few weeks, the Double-A Zone will transition its Faces of the NCAA feature from audio to video format.
On a pair of Mondays With Myles podcasts, President Brand addressed the work and life balance issues in intercollegiate athletics and the findings of the Presidential Task Force from its recently released report about the state of Division I college sports.
Mercyhurst University assistant athletics director and head wrestling coach Tony Cipollone shared an emotional post in Coaches’ Corner about the experience of losing a student-athlete to suicide. Cipollone discusses the tragic circumstances and provides enlightening commentary for both coaches and student-athletes.
Minnesota State University Mankato wrestling coach Jim Makovsky commented on Cipollone’s post: "When you lose a team member, the team needs you to be a rock to lean on and they are counting on you to lead them through the grieving process. Most coaches have never received any formal training in this area and your campus counseling center should be involved in some capacity. As coaches we are amateur counselors and can lead our teams through many different types of adversity."
University of New Haven women’s soccer student-athlete Desiree Guenther continued her posts on the Double-A Zone and submitted a photo blog from the team’s senior day celebration. Middle Tennessee State University women’s basketball player and Sun Belt Conference preseason player of the year Chrissy Givens discussed the team’s first practices in her guest post.
A number of schools submitted stories of community service initiatives and those were discussed on the Double-A Zone’s Morning Coffee feature.
The NCAA’s official blog can be found at http://www.doubleazone.com. To find out how to submit a guest post or a note for Morning Coffee, contact Josh Centor (jcentor@ncaa.org).
