In an effort to expose the exciting things happening on NCAA campuses across the nation, the Double-A Zone spent a weekend chronicling the experiences of Division II student-athletes, coaches and fans at Grand Valley State University (see story, page 20).
In cooperation with the Double-A Zone, Grand Valley State added a permanent link to the NCAA’s official blog, sending traffic to the Web site throughout the weekend. A number of enthusiastic responses were shared, including one from an alumnus in Phoenix.
"The Laker football game-day atmosphere is truly unique as students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of GVSU come together in Allendale, Michigan, to celebrate everything that is positive about intercollegiate athletics," wrote Kelly Israels, a 1989 graduate of the school.
"On the Road" will be a recurring feature at NCAA member institutions, providing a first-hand perspective and look at academic and athletics excellence at colleges and universities.
A pair of Mondays With Myles podcasts aired on the Double-A Zone during the last two weeks. NCAA President Myles Brand shed some light on the discussions he’s been having about youth basketball with some of the sport’s major stakeholders. In the second podcast, Dr. Brand answered a question from a blogger about the infractions process and the levying of penalties.
NCAA Director of Membership Services/Student-Athlete Reinstatement Jennifer Strawley discussed her role with the national office staff. A former softball student-athlete at the University of Pennsylvania, Strawley discusses the student-athlete reinstatement process in a Faces of the NCAA podcast.
A spirited discussion about the brawl between the University of Miami (Florida) and Florida International University football teams also took place on the Double-A Zone last week.
One commenter wrote: "Miami and Florida International should have the rest of their season forfeited and the main troublemakers in that brawl should be kicked out of school."
