Wartburg maintains championship feeling with fifth crown
Seniors Hubbard and Hinschberger capture individual titles to lead Knights’ winning effort

Wartburg’s Tyler Hubbard won the 125-pound title match over Ohio Northern’s Ty Klofta.

Even for the tradition-rich Wartburg wrestling program, the 2005-06 season will go down as one of the best in program history.

The Knights added to their trophy case with a fifth Division III Wrestling Championships team title March 3-4 at The College of New Jersey.

Wartburg warmed up for the national title by capturing the 2006 Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals and its 14th consecutive Iowa Conference championship.

“Any time you can go out and win a national championship, it feels great,” said Wartburg coach Jim Miller. “I’m proud of how our guys carried themselves on and off the mat at the meet. They deserved this national championship after a year of hard work and dedication.”

Miller has guided Wartburg to either a first-place or second-place finish in the national championships in 13 of the past 15 years.

Seniors Tyler Hubbard and Dustin Hinschberger led the way for the Knights by winning individual titles. Hubbard defeated Ty Klofta of Ohio Northern, 5-4, in the 125-pound final, and Hinschberger won his final match, 7-1, over Simpson’s Dustin Brewer.

It is the fourth straight year Wartburg has had at least two individual champions.

Wartburg finished with 145 1/2 points to outdistance second-place finisher Wisconsin-La Crosse, which had 106 points. Defending champion Augsburg was third, followed by Luther and York (Pennsylvania).

Wartburg opened a large lead on the first day of the tournament when its wrestlers combined for a 10-1 record.

Besides national titles from Hubbard and Hinschberger, four other Knights advanced to individual finals matches. Scott Kauffman (174 pounds), Akeem Carter (184), Blake Gillis (heavyweight) and Jacob Naig (149) each managed runner-up finishes. Carter and Gillis lost in overtime, and Kaufman fell one point shy in his bid for a crown.

Nine Wartburg wrestlers achieved all-America status. It marks the 11th consecutive season that the program has achieved five or more in the national tournament.

The Knights also have had at least one all-American in every Division III national championship since 1988.
