The Scarlet Raptors went unbeaten through the bracket and topped off the school’s first title in any sport with a 3-2 win over the Tommies in the championship final May 22 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex in
“It doesn’t get any better than this,” said Rutgers-Camden coach Carl Taylor after the win. “We didn’t hit well today but we got some breaks that went our way. These players did what couldn’t be done.”
Rutgers-Camden pitcher Michelle Schlichtig, the lone senior on the squad, pitched every inning during the tournament, including a complete-game four-hitter in the final. She was 32-3 on the year.
“Every senior wants to end their senior year with a win. When I was on the mound I stayed focused, and the thought of losing never crossed my mind. I just stuck with the game plan and it worked out,” Schlichtig said.

But Schlichtig wasn’t at her best at first.
