Wisconsin-Oshkosh, spurred by meet records in both throwing events by senior Robyn Jarocki, claimed a record-tying sixth indoor crown March 10-11 at the Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Jarocki, who again provided the scoring spark that brought the Titans a third straight team title, broke her own record in winning a third consecutive 20-pound weight throw title and added a record toss in the shot put to score 20 of her team’s 44 points.
The Titans outscored runner-up Williams by six points in competition at St. Olaf’s
Jarocki boosted her career championships total to seven, including two titles at the 2005 Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships and a shot put title at last year’s indoor meet.
Her five indoor titles ties her for second in career indoor victories with Brandeis jumper Eleena Zhelezov and
Meanwhile, the Titans’ team victory tied Wisconsin-Oshkosh with Christopher Newport at six championships each in Division III women’s indoor track and field.
Jarocki may have been even more excited about the repeat shot put title than she was about the third straight weight-throw victory, after which she expressed slight disappointment because she just missed topping 21 meters.
“I had a huge P.R. (personal record) and I shouldn’t want to ask for anything more than that,” she said after becoming the first woman in championships history to throw longer than 17 meters in the shot put. “I was hoping that I would have this kind of day today and I did everything I had to do to do that.”
Wisconsin-Oshkosh throws coach Pat Ebel said the shot put performance fulfilled the promise Jarocki often has shown in practice in the event.
“You don’t get to coach many athletes like Robyn,” he said. “We knew she was special from her freshman year on.”
Williams, whose Caroline Cretti won the 5,000-meter run, posted its best finish yet at the championships by placing second, and CCNY placed third to post its fifth top-five finish at the championships.
Two teams that each collected a pair of individual titles tied for fourth in team competition.
Former Division II member Keene State posted its first top-five finish as a Division III institution after Breanne Lucey won the 800-meter run and then anchored the Owls’ distance medley relay team to victory, and Illinois Wesleyan also cracked the top five for the first time with event victories by Rachel Anderson in the 400-meter dash and Melissa Harden in the long jump.
