Success — Graduating members of Sul Ross State University’s 2003-04 men’s basketball team joined President R. Vic Morgan (second from left) for a celebratory photo during August commencement ceremonies at the school. Nine of the team’s 15 members enrolled in graduate programs, and five of those student-athletes have completed master’s degrees — including Chris Packer (second from right), who in 2005 received the university’s highest academic honor with his selection as Sul Ross State Man of the Year. The 2004 team was the first from Sul Ross State to play in the Division III Men’s Basketball Championship, where it advanced to the Sweet 16. Photo by Barbara Richerson.

Sports sponsorship: Franklin & Marshall College has added women’s rowing as a varsity sport — the 27th sport sponsored by the school — and also has elevated men’s rowing to "club/varsity" status, meaning it will have access to a full-time coach and use of equipment. The teams will continue to share a boathouse built in 2001 on the Susquehanna River, about 16 miles from campus. "This develops another great opportunity for women on this campus," said Patty Epps, senior associate director of athletics at the school. "The fact that both men and women will have the equipment and a full-time coach are significant upgrades for both programs." Rowing has been a club sport at the school since 1984 and has generated more than 250 alumni since its inception. "This is exciting news not only for the college, but for the many athletes who will be given a chance to compete in another varsity sport," said Franklin & Marshall President John Fry.

Milestones: Joe Russo became just the fourth coach in Division III and the eighth coach in all divisions to record 300 victories in women’s soccer when The College of New Jersey shut out Montclair State University September 23. The milestone win came in the Lions’ first game in their new soccer stadium ... Amy Watson collected her 200th victory in field hockey when Keene State College shut out Framingham State College September 18. Watson, who has coached at the school for 17 years, has led the Owls to three appearances in the Division III Field Hockey Championship and four Little East titles — as well as an Eastern College Athletic Conference championship — since the school reclassified to Division III in 1997.

Miscellanous: The four-year-old women’s soccer program at Lincoln University (Pennsylvania) recorded its first shutout, and set a school record for most goals in a single game in the process with its 6-0 win over Columbia Union College. Freshman goalkeeper Skyla Fore stopped nine shots as Lincoln, which collected a school-record four victories last season, evened this season’s record at 1-1.
